HOW does Hetfield PLAY and SING this...

Battery... It is hard to play on it's own but to sing at the same time? Impossible

This is isolated guitar from Battery

I dont wanna marginalize the difficulty but it's definitely different when you try to imitate vs you write and play your own riff. It's always easier to play your own idea than someone else's. Still Papa Het is the GOAT.

My guitar teacher asked me to play TNT and sing "Oi!". I seriously couldn't do it!

It verse's rhythm fits pretty close to the riff, so it's actually not that hard. Believe it or not, the pre-chorus of "That Was Just Your Life" with the "I blind my eyes and try to force it all into place" is probably the hardest Hetfield riff to sing and play, even though its just hitting an E power chord.

I’ve been thinking about this riff for the past two days, I don’t understand how you manage to do that

I can do it. Took me 10+ years to understand what I had to "think" to get it right. That video from The Art of Guitar about how to count the beats correctly in this song was crucial to make me understand. I hope this tip can help others too!

In my personal experience it’s all about singing every second word in the verse while hitting the power chords on the lower two strings. This way you create a vocal timing that synergises with your hands. Practice and timing!

Imagine playing holy wars (or any other Megadeth riff) and singing. Papa het and Dave are the best metal Guitarists ever imo

Hey, I’m still amazed that just playing guitar is a thing. All these stringy things, both hands going at the same time…it’s madness!

Kudos to ya’ll that can do it🍻

I’ve been playing for over 25 years and I still can’t get the right side of my brain to kick in and be able to sing at the same time as riffing. I end up sounding like Kipp from Nepolean Dynamite. Het’s talent blows my mind.

I've played and sang since high school and in the beginning it was really just about learning both parts well separately then putting them together, I don't really even think that much about it now...Hetfield and mustaine are both great at it!

Yes yes megadeth riffs are more complex ....but 80% of Dave's singing ability are lost to his guitar

I saw the title, remembered that I thought of the exact same thing about a metallica song like 2 days ago, spent around 30 seconds thinking and then my mind sparked up and I said "it was battery" then clicked the vid and instantly heard the riff
that was so satisfying

He's been doing it full out for years and making a living as well! So I would say magically!

There's lots of (singers + Rythm guitarist + lead guitarist) like Paul Guilbert, Jimi Hendrix + Glenn Frey .Gary Moore ..and the same Dave Mustaine ) ..which is more difficult than what Hetfield ( singer + punk guitarist) really does.

How I did this: Step 1: ignore triplets, play single notes and sing along. Step 2: try to visualize triplets as one sound, one move. Step 3: lashing out the act_(phantom sylable for the note)_ion. Acotion, not action. Reactotion, not reaction. One week of consistent training and you get it down.
