I heard from somewhere.. that the stand in its horizontal orientation improves the air flow in that position for the console. A flat footprint has a tendency to accumulates heat more for the unit especially if you consider specs inside these machines get really hot so cooling needs to be imperative.. Microsoft and sony clearly made these consoles to primarily stand vertically for better air flow. but they knew people would want to place it horizontally. So sony opted out using the stand to improve air flow for the console in it horizontal position on top of all the other things they have in place for the cooling.. I dont know if any of this is true, but that's what I heard...
