Did you know that every time you send a message, stream a video, or even just browse the web, you’re relying on data centers?

Data centers are the backbone of our digital world. They power everything from social media to online banking, making them crucial to our everyday lives. But powering them is killing our environment. The energy associated with their operations are tremendous. However the demand for more data centers is only growing especially with the AI revolution upon us.

Introducing, green data centers. A green data center, also known as a sustainable data center, is a facility designed to minimize its environmental impact by using energy-efficient technologies and practices. Some key features include:
- energy efficient hardware and cooling systems
- renewable energy sources
- efficient cooling
- waste heat utilisation

These practices not only help reduce the environmental impact but also often lead to cost savings in the long run.

Microsoft’s underwater data center project, known as Project Natick, was an innovative experiment aimed at exploring the feasibility and benefits of underwater data centers. The project aimed to determine if underwater data centers could be more reliable and energy-efficient than traditional land-based data centers. Particularly through their optimisation of sea cooling which allows for more stable temperatures and savings in facility space. The project also explored the potential for quickly deploying data centers near coastal cities to provide faster cloud services to nearby populations.
