Scam Hunting at India's Holiest Cremation Ground

Religious scams and begging are rife in India and there are even extortion and donation scams being run at India's most famous ghat - Manikarnika Ghat (The Burning Ghat). Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi is the most famous cremation ghat in India and scammers flock there during tourist season to target tourists.

One benefit scammers have is that cameras are not allowed to be used in this area of Varanasi! The Police literally tell me to stop filming as I unknowingly enter the area.

So I did find the donation scammers, but I deleted the audio I captured by mistake (video wasn't possible). The guys stand right at the first entrance to the enormous woodpiles where there's a Chaiwala and a guy selling wood. The scammers hang around the entrance waiting for foreigners to enter from the main gali (I entered via the rear Ghat entrance first time). As soon as you enter the woodpiles, someone is gonna approach you. Remember to say, "Nahi Chahiye Ji."

If you have any problems with beggars, donation scams, priests trying to extort you, or people harassing you, find the Police immediately. There are many Police on the main street behind Manikarnika Ghat. As you approach the Police, the scammers will flee.

I agree with your first comment about Pushkar. I visited India from Florida three years ago, and the Pandit in Pushkar told me I had to pay 6, 000INR at the completion of my puja - he indicated had I not pay this, none of my prayers would have been answered. I told the Pandit I didn’t have that money on me and he told me he would walk with me to an ATM to get it. The way I saw it was, he needed the money more than I did. I looked at it as charity. Never will I ever go back to Pushkar! Shame on you India for deceiving your visitors.
