Need to remember to teach that even simple sounding tracks are complex. layers of instruments that work so well together that they sound simple. If you listen to Cuebeats or Murda/Metro their beats are simple but not lazy. There is an art form to creating simple beats that sound full.

It seems like everyone in the comments is confusing head room with dynamic range. So many people are saying "Just turn it down and leave Xdb of head room." That does nothing. If that was the issue, there would be no issue because any mix engineer also knows how to turn down the volume knob when they get your tracks. The issue is dynamic range. When you add limiters and compressors on your masters, you decrease the dynamic range, which is decreasing the space available for the vocals. Once you do that, there is no amount of head room that is going to fix that. It's still squashed no matter what DB you turn it down to. Test this out yourself. Compress or limit a track. Export it with and without head room. The wavform will be identical in terms of peaks and dips. I'm not saying don't compress or limit. Like Pain said, don't go heavy with it. Once it's squashed, it's squashed...no one can undo that.

Use a limiter before the beat is sold so you can display how the record could sound finished. Sell them a version with no limiter so their engineer will have headroom to polish the record.

I sold only the mixed beat, I just use the master track with tags to put the volume in -0.10db to sound commercial when people hear the beat on beatstars, but the original track is on -6db without any masterting process

I don't use anything on my master track but I run the tagged wav that im gonna use as the preview version through A.I mastering and leave the actual untagged wav with only my mix

Great video! Completely agree! Usually what I do is drop a lot of drums during the verses so the artist can have some room. I'll take out the hihats and maybe leave the hi hat rolls make the snare and kicks farther apart. I dont put anything on the master bus except a slight eq and a conpresser after I'm satisfied with the mix just to help blend the drums and melody

The beats on beatstars are loud as fuck. No matter how I mix my beat, no matter how loud its coming out of my speakers, its low as shit compared to everything else once I export it. So how are you getting loud mixes with no limiting or bus compressor processing?

im glad u mention this because last few months i been comparing loudness metering and like my old K-meter...thing about it is i notice an average song is waaaayyy above that "sweet spot" they talk about 4 vocals. like everything seem like it be above 0. i was always told it should be between -3 and -6 db but final songs i can clearly see are bout 2db or more

Great post. I record a lot of rappers and I tell their producers please mix how u want it(levels panning etc) but don’t put any processing on the master buss and leave at least -3/-5 head room. And nobody listens lol

This is currently my issue. Sometimes I just add a little too much and forget about the vocalist. I find that leaving the beat I put together for the the day and coming back to analyze it helps a lot. But shit... sometimes I just like to jam to the beat with my keys and it ends up on my beat lol

I had to learn its always about serving the artists. Producers get so excited about putting their music out there and tend to put only themselves on that beat. Beat selling is different than just showcasing music but is serving as well.
