FAA pauses all domestic flight departures amid system outage

Airports across the country are at a standstill as a nationwide FAA outage that forced flights to remain grounded, causing chaos for travelers. NBC News' Tom Costello reports.

I've seen this kind of thing happen in the corporate world. Suddenly everything stops working because nobody realized that a key system was running on an old 386 workstation from the mid 90s and it finally died.

I’m a pilot, not sure if the information means anything to anyone but any departing flight would have gotten any relevant NOTAMS on their iPads before they left, and they go into airplane mode while flying so they downloaded the information before leaving, the problem is departing flights need to download that info and they can’t now that the system is down

They spend more time and money writing the fine print on why you won't get a refund than they will on the problem.

It is either they were hacked or the system needs to be updated. The system goes down makes no sense. It is fishy to me. 😐

Maybe the airline industry needs to stop bribing the government to look the other way on the fact that they haven't updated anything in decades. Maybe they should stop getting government bailouts so that they can do stock buybacks instead of actually running their businesses the correct way. Maybe they should be allowed to fail. Just a thought.

It looks like their system security has been compromised/hacked. Which is scary to think because if it has been hacked it means that this is the beginning of something so much bigger.

Hi, have you check to make sure the device is on? Okay, let's power down the device and try to unplug the cables connecting to device then wait 5 mins. Now reconnect the cables and power the device on.

Okay let's try the same steps but now we will wait 10 mins and that should fix it.
