Intensive Farming Practices: The region has adopted high-yielding variety crops that require large amounts of water and fertilizers. This has led to excessive use of chemical inputs, which can degrade soil health and contaminate water resources.

Irrigation Efficiency: Traditional flood irrigation methods, which are still widely used, are inefficient and lead to water wastage. The lack of modern irrigation techniques, such as drip or sprinkler systems, exacerbates the problem.

Soil Degradation: Continuous cultivation and the overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have led to soil degradation, reducing its ability to retain water and nutrients. This impacts the sustainability of agriculture and increases the reliance on external inputs.

Pollution: The runoff from fields treated with fertilizers and pesticides can lead to pollution of surface and groundwater. This contamination affects not only the water supply but also the health of local ecosystems.

Climate Change: Changes in climate patterns, including altered rainfall distribution and increased temperatures, impact water availability and agricultural productivity. Punjab’s water resources are increasingly under stress due to these changes.

Ineffective Water Management: There has been a lack of effective water management policies and practices to address the growing water demands and environmental impacts. This includes insufficient efforts in water conservation and management of water resources.
