Come with me my love
To the sea, the sea of love
I want to tell you
How much I love you

Do you remember when we met
Thats the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you

Come with me
To the sea, of love

Do you remember when we met
Thats the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you

Come with me
To the sea, of love

Do you remember when we met
Thats the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you

I want to tell you
How much I love you
I want to tell you
How much I love you

What a timeless master piece from 1959, like it was yesterday!✌️ And the Honeydrippers did this justice in 1984!❤️

I was in high school when this song came out and it blew us all away. I can remember many slow dances to this beautiful song. I was lucky to have experienced the 50’s. What an era for music and it’s gone with the wind!!!

Here is the true to life story behind “Sea Of Love” (1959)…

In 1958, John Phillip Baptiste was working as a bellhop in a Louisana hotel. There was a girl named Verdie Mae Thomas he was trying to impress, and since he was good with a guitar, he decided to do it through music.

Phillips was quoted as saying : “I had my guitar, so I went and wrote this song, ‘Sea Of Love.’ You see, she really didn’t believe in me. But I felt if I could sing about it - a sea of love where it’s quiet and peaceful - I could really show her how much I loved her and cared for her.”

A gas meter reader happened to hear Baptiste practicing the tune and told him to see a record producer, George Khoury, who had him audiotape it and convinced him to take the stage name “Phil Phillips.” “Sea Of Love” was released in 1959 on Khoury’s independent record label, and did so well in Louisiana that Mercury Records picked it up to distribute nationally, where it became A KNOCKOUT‼️

Phillips claimed that he earned just $ 6, 800* from his songwriting, and he didn’t even get the girl, which was OK by him. Said Phillips, “I married the right one though. It’s a good thing I didn’t marry that Verdie.”

Phil Phillips might have gone down in history as a ONE-HITTER WONDER, but “Sea Of Love” has become a standard covered by a myriad of performers over the years…. 🩷🌊💚

May you rest in peace, John Philip Baptiste, a.k.a. Phil Phillips (1926 - 2020)… 🌹

* Those $ 6, 800 in 1959 would be worth about $ 70, 550 in 2023.

Hearing this tune, by the original, Phil Phillips; and it's 1959 all over again...Arguably, things were simpler and it was a better era.

Takes me back 60 years. They don't make music like that anymore. Thank you so much. I'm a teenager again.
