The main airport in Barcelona, Spain has diverted 50 flights due to land there because of a rainstorm hitting the area.

This comes after the Spanish weather service issued a red alert for the region, in anticipation of torrential rain which they are starting to see.

More than 200 people were killed in Spain last week due to flooding in Valencia, which is the worst in Spain for decades.

Spanish rescuers are focusing their search for missing people on underground garages and a multi-storey car park following the floods.

The storm caught many victims in their vehicles on roads and in underground spaces such as car parks, tunnels and garages where rescue operations are particularly difficult.

I live in Barcelona.

The rain was very heavy with thunderstorms this morning. But has since stopped (approximately noon). Currently overcast with some sun poking though.
The road around Casteldfels flooded (a town where the footballers live). Not sure of current status. Update: Been informed that the road to/from is cleared and in use once again.

I think the reason the airport shut was actually due to it raining INSIDE the terminals.

I live in S Florida so I understand about life threatening weather. Every year now we are subject to the potential of catastrophic hurricanes. We dodged the bullet in this area this year, but many people north have been impacted. Very sad and scary.

It now looks rather macabre to read "Bienvenido" (Welcome) over the entry to the underground garage.

I live in Barcelona, today morning whole city got red alerts ‼️ running from all cellphones as emergency warning, phones just ringed like crazy with huge yellow warning picture on whole of screen alerting everyone of coming storm…
I really hope it doesn’t actually hit Barcelona as I can imagine get stuck underground in metro when water hits… it could be a massive death toll…
I just hope if storm does hit, metros will be promptly closed

I'm sorry but Spain emergency disaster plan is worse than a third world country...
How can it be that the people are doing the cleaning and there is no update on those missing days after?

What about sending your correspondant to the actual place where things are happening instead of talking from a rooftop in Madrid?

Me (Android) and my wife (iOs) had an alert ⚠️ on our smartphone homescreen (while day) on 22nd, 23rd October when we were in Valencia. Almost a week ago. Are we the only one? Atleast the media is making me feel so.

Rafael is a Spanish journalist who has to read up on the autonomous regional governments in his own country. The way Spanish government is set up is that the autonomous regions are responsible for issuing alerts ( ie. Catalunya today) and asking the central government for help which Valencia dragged its feet doing. The reason Valencia didn't want to ask the central government for help is political. He was right there. People should be angry at Mazon.
