CCS approves 15 LCH
Finally, the wait is over. On 30th March 2022, the Cabinet committee on security chaired by PM Narendra Modi has given approval for procurement of 15 LCH – light combat Helicopter limited series production or LSP at the cost of Rs 3,887 crore along with the infrastructure cost of Rs 377 crore. In January 2021, government gave initial approval for the production of an initial batch of 15 LCHs which are planned for completion by 2022-23, subject to receipt of the order. An additional hangar was set up which is capable of achieving a peak production of 30 helicopters per year. Three LSP LCH has already been produced by HAL. 2 of them are already deployed by Air Force and remaining one by Army. Its also important to note that Light combat helicopters are in the negative list of imports. Indian Air Force has requirement of 65 LCH and army has requirement of 114 of them.
About LCH
The LCH LSP is an indigenously designed, developed and manufactured state–of–the–art modern combat helicopter containing approximately 45% indigenous content by value which will progressively increase to more than 55% for series production version. It is one of the best attack helicopters in its category and a formidable weapon in mountain warfare with exceptional high-altitude performance and stealth characteristics. The helicopter can be used in variety of mission which includes Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), Destruction of Enemy Air Defence (DEAD), counter–insurgency (CI) operations in jungle and urban environments in support to ground forces, against slow moving aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs), high–altitude bunker busting operations
