Today we're looking at the act of spotting targets. Sounds simple, but there are some pretty cool mechanics worth noting.

Great choice of topic! I had never really explored the spotting mechanics before, beyond "guys, spot bad guys with your q keys."

Very informative video, thanks for posting!

I had no idea you could spot enemies through terrain... never thought to try, really.

I can see the logic of what they did with the mechanics, though. It can be abused but it's not terribly likely if you can't see what you're trying to spot so I guess it was the lesser of two evils compared to it not working when it should.

I can't stress enough how important spotting is in this game, so many people die because they don't know where the enemy is...sometimes when I'm in a 1v1 fight and I realise I will die, the last thing I do is hit that Q-key. Most of the time it actually gives me a spotting bonus a few seconds later :3 Even if you die you can be useful for your team.

I've noticed very frequently that if you point your crosshairs at where an enemy just was, and they ducked behind something, it will usually spot them, but no dorito will show up if they're behind something. The time limit is pretty quick but I'd say it's about a second, maybe half a second, and this seems to just be to account for response time and as a mechanic to help combat peaking snipers particularly on mountain ridges though it does work if somebody runs past a door.

It's kind of a reverse to the 'initiative' due to lag compensation, a bit behind where you see their echo is a hazy ghost that you can spot them with even though on your screen they are not there anymore, and on their screen they're even further ahead.

A tip for spotting is if you see a enemy that is trying to flank, give a spot so people can take that person out. Even if you aren't going to go engage the person you spotted, someone is bound to in most fights.
It only takes a second or less to do.

It's R1 on PS4 if anyone is wondering

Its probably also important to mention that you can spot squad beacons, but it only gives an audio cue, no Doritos in game or in the minimap. Also, if you are having trouble spotting a target with your primary, try switching to you secondary, I don't know if it just feels better or has some legitimate game feature, but it helps either way, especially with air targets

It never ceases to amaze me how many people have no idea how spotting works, or how many people just never use spotting.

Marker perk with lashers is really helpful you will mark all the targets that got weakened by your AOE.

5:05 Also try holding down "Q" while looking at the target, if options come up like they do on a friendly, it's a friendly. If not, fire away!

I couldn't begin to tell you how many Infiltrators I've found and gunned down because they were just spam-spotting and not even thinking about how audible they were.

When manning my sunderesr's A-A turret I use night vision and try to ping any shadow that movies in the sky, because friendlies look very similar when gray and I have often started firing before noticing that it where not pinging.

Spotting is a HUGE boon when running with pugs.  They are always looking for peeps to shoot, and if you can show them the way, they will attack.   Of course, motion detectors are tops for this, but I have sat on a hill, and 'called out' enemies for pugs to shoot, and changed the flow of battle,  many times.
