This week we decided to become locals and headed into the Scottish wilderness to wild camp.
While we wait for they keys to our brand new house, we ditched van life and hiked into the mountains to spend the night taking only what we could carry on our backs.
It was a little stormy and it wasn't the best night sleep we've ever had but getting to experience wild camping in scotland is a bucket list tick off even if it did go a little wrong.
I'm pretty sure where we slept was legal - but always make sure to check before you head out. Roll on sleeping in a house with a roof!

Love your ideas, house designs but remember the more glass the greater the potential to lose heat. After living in the south of Germany for a while ( best quality windows ever), where the winters are similar to the north of Scotland . I totally recommend you consider triple glazed- thermal windows ect . Without them you’ll feel the cold even through double glazed! Means spending big bucks but you’ll reap the benefits next winter 👍

So, I renovated our basement to create a 3 bedroom apartment for my MIL this summer. I got the big trades in for electrics, plumbing, plasterwork etc, my advice based on my experience is this, serious jobs, get someone in BUT work with someone you get a vibe with, someone you feel that knows you and gets what your plan is. The rest, YouTube it, give it a bash, what’s the worst that can happen??? I learnt so many skills this summer on my renovations. Now I can build walls, tile, grout, decorate, build kitchens, build glass brick walls, refurb furniture, fill holes in walls, connect aerials, do basic plumbing.


You guys can do this, it’s hard work but you can do it.

Timber cladding Craig.
Douglas Fir is a good structural timber but for exterior cladding Western Red Cedar (1st choice) or Larch would be much better.
Both are grown and available in Scotland 👍

The bifold doors look great, however consider the cost versus how often you will actually be able to use them in the highlands. We live in Perthshire and decided against them because of the cold and the midgies

Lol thought on Renos. For the addition, you'll save a boatload of cost and headache if you keep it to a room that doesn't require plumbing, so a bedroom or living room for instance. If you put the kitchen there, it's a whole bit kettle of fish with plumbing, gas lines, lots of power of different levels, etc. If you can, keep the kitchen where it is to spare yourself the headache, unless you really wanna go in full boar in cost and headache.

When considering renovations and windows, keep an eye on the sky for East/West facing windows and views. Especially in winter and summer when too hot or too cold might come into play. Lots of information on that for earth shelter homes, but same designs can be applied to traditional homes. Expecially homes like yours with massive block exterior walls.
