2024 Volkswagen Atlas + Cross Sport In-Person First Look

The Volkswagen Atlas has received a second refresh for the 2024 model year. Tweaked exterior details and an all-new interior dashboard design gives the brand's largest model a modern update. Also, for both the regular Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport, the V6 is gone. The new engine is a single 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 269 horsepower. Let's take a (rather noisy, unfortunately) first look.

The exterior has always looked great on these. This looks even better imo. It’s a shame the interior now looks better but is plagued by a lackluster control interface. I’m surprised if this interior lasts a year with VW confirming to already working on bringing back physical knobs and controls to their lineup.

This has a LOT standard and very practical, love it. Would have liked to see some kind of hybrid option though, plus no capacative touch points.

I wish they'd offer the 3.0T at least as an option. The Atlas is just too lethargic in most settings. I get that most buyers don't care for bracket racing their family truckster, but there is no way this thing would be comfortable towing 5K pounds with people inside.

All of that aside, the interior is a MAJOR step up in quality, finish, and design. Seems like VW is moving away from their hard-angke styled interiors for a more premium design.

Atlas is the clearest case of the industry needing to move to bigger turbo 4 bangers. A 2.5T is a minimum for a 4000lb school bus

2.0 L turbo for large 3-row SUV is perhaps good for euro/asia market... not US

Personally I think all third row should be 2 seated like the atlas.

Most suv third row barely fit 2 yet auto maker always try’s to squeeze 3 people back there.

Love the refresh. Not a fan of the all haptic controls or stubby shifter. I test drove a 2022 and loved the space. However I felt it was very slow. I'm hoping the new engine is peppier. Wished they given it the 3.0 turbo v6 from the Audi.

"Atlas isn't selling well bc it is one of the least reliable models, how do we fix this?"
"Let's reduce the engine size by 40% but keep the tow rating the same, add our new infotainment and electronics that have proven to be even less reliable than before, remove all buttons and light up the logo!"

Alex in your opinion what 3 row midsize do you like best? This, pilot, Cx-90, grand highlander, telluride, or palisade?

The grand Highlander imo beats this in most ways. No v6 in the atlas means no reason to get it over the turbo grand Highlander

Thanks for bringing this to us Alex! Because of your review, I got the 2022 Atlas for my growing family of five last year and love it! The 24 Atlas looks great, but I will be holding on to my 22 for a long time.

The power output on the 4cyl isn’t all that bad honestly. Taking away the V6 was dumb but adding a hybrid or even a 3.0T option would be cool.

Absolutely love the exterior updates!! Super sharp looking vehicle! I am disappointed by the lack of V6 as at LEAST an option...the Highlander is the ONLY other vehicle in the class with no V6.
