As I am very happy that my home Bundesland "Salzburg" was so prominent festured in this video, you might get the wrong idea that Austria is just the Alps. Mainly the western part of Austria is. The east part is rather flat, has beautiful planes and Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Vienna are stunning city's combining century old buildings with modern architekture. Greetings from austria

It's an honor to see this video as an Austrian! I'm glad you were so excited about the landscapes!

As an Austrian, I can confirm that our country really is this beautiful. And the best part: since it’s so small, you can get to all this stunning places in no time. If you like hiking (and/or winter sports), I think Austria and Switzerland are the countries to go! Let’s just hope we can preserve the nature for many centuries to come!

Man, the state of the Pasterze glacier just brings tears to my eyes. Even though you might think it still looks beautiful, you should have seen it 15 or 20 years ago 😥
Also this video focussed mainly on destinations close to Salzburg airport and dismisses a lot of beautiful sites further away. Carinthia or Styria for example have very beatiful places but also the eastern foothills and flats. I grew up in the east of Austria with the gorgeous backdrop of the mountains in the distance and live in Vienna now but man do I love the Alpine landscape too

Austria and Switzerland are breathtaking. Standing on top of a mountain and looking out over a valley towards mountains in the distance, is beyond my ability to describe. I teared up. Beauty like I've never seen before or since.

When I first went to Austria I couldn't believe how like a fairytale the place is, especially the castles and the lakes surrounded by amazingly high mountains. Vienna is worth a long visit too. Its old churches and castles reminding people that Austria had its own empire until the 1st world war.

I am not an Austrian, but it is an honor for me to live and study in Austria!! I have never seen a better country in my life, although I traveled almost all over Europe and Scandinavia.

I absolutely loved visiting Austria, it was all beautiful but also very clean and the people were friendly. Me and my sister spent weeks learning German so we could communicate better. We had such a wonderful holiday! ❤️

@3:50 while Austria is among the richest countries in the world, prices are actually quite decent compared to its neighbors. 35€ toll might sound expensive, but you have to consider the huge cost of maintaining this road. After snowy winters often some sections have to be basically rebuilt...

@4:27 speaking of snowy winters: unfortunately the Pasterze glacier (like most glaciers in the alps) is rapidly shrinking. The whole grey area in front used to be covered by ice just 20 years ago, and the footpath led literally _onto_ the glacier. It is currently losing 40-50 meters of length each year 😞

@5:40 when you are in Hallstatt (which literally means 'salt-place' in old celtic languages; every place with 'hall' in its name at some point in time had to do with salt) it's also worth visiting the salt mine. It is the oldest in the world, with some archaeological records dating back over 5000 (!) years. The whole historic time period of "hallstatt culture" (1200 – 450 BC) is named after this town. Another nearby attraction is the Dachstein caves (one of which is a permanent ice cave), one of the largest cave networks in the world.

Generally, the video is very focused on the alpine region of Austria; but the country has to offer so much more when it comes to landscapes, climate, culture, ... in the eastern part it is more hilly until it gets flat and steppe-like towards the eastern border with Hungary. Lots of towns and cities are worth a visit as well, not just Salzburg but also Innsbruck, Graz, ... and of course the capital Vienna – all with literally millennia of history.
Austria is also a good starting point to visit surrounding countries, as it's located right in the middle of Central Europe and has historically been a gateway between Western and Eastern Europe (even during the cold war there used to be daily trains into the Eastern bloc from Vienna). Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia are just a day's drive (preferably by train) away.

Thanks for admiring our landscapes! 🇦🇹
I'm not an outdoorsy person but I get why many of my fellow Austrians are. 😅

No, thank YOU for watching. Because that is the appeal of your videos - seeing you take the time to watch what is dear and normal to us. Greetings from Austria!

This is a typically excellent video from Sean. The title is a mite misleading, however, as the places he covers are all in the rural parts of western Austria. Places such Salzberg itself, Graz, and the most romantic of all European capitals - Vienna - are all worth visiting when in this ancient land.

Austria is a beautiful country which I have visited over 20 times and never get tired of exploring especially round the Zillertal Alps. From that huge lake/dam there is a well used path up and over a mountain pass into Italy - and, of course, a hotel/restaurant at the top! Walks and hikes are well signposted showing the time it will take to get to the destination, and there are many mountain cafes for the weary traveller to get something to eat and drink, some even have live music to get your toes tapping!. Cable cars and chairlifts help you to get up into the mountains and most of the lakes have boat trips or boat hire to enjoy too. Salzburg is a gorgeous city, well worth a visit, as is Vienna.

Other beautiful places in Austria:
Piber in Steiermark - the breeding facility for the Lipizzaner horses of the Hofreitschule in Vienna.
Graz - the beautiful capital of Steiermark
Hochosterwitz - a medieval castle on top of a butte with 14 unique castle gates (it was sieged but never conquered)
the Kärnten lakes land - many lakes to swim in the midst of the mountains
Innsbruck - the beautiful capital of Tyrolia with "Goldenes Dachl" and Winter Olympics facilities
Salzburg - the home of Mozart and stage of "The Sound of Music"

Hi Ryan. I flew Air Lauda from Australia which stopped in Austria before getting a BA flight to London on the way to Ireland. As the plane flew over Austria on the way to the airport, we saw beautiful villages, green grass, and gorgeous cottages. I was sad that we only got to stay 4 hours in a concrete airport and then had to go to London.

Hallstatt is known for there ancient Salt mining. The first salt mining was there 5, 000 BC and in during the time of Pharao Tutankhamun (ca. 1, 500 BC) the salt production was still on a industrial scale with mines already 100 - 200m deep.
