* Ca. 30 km nordwestlich von Athen liegt die Stadt Elefsina, heute ein Vorort von Athen. Das antike Eleusis war durch seine Mysterien bekannt, seine Berühmtheit verdankte es der Tatsache, dass es der Hauptsitz der Verehrung von Demeter und Persephone war, und den zu Ehren dieser Göttinnen gefeierten Mysterien, die Eleusinia genannt wurden und bis heute als das heiligste aller griechischen Mysterien galten bis zum Untergang des Heidentums. Die meisten Ruinen stammen jedoch aus römischer Zeit. Ein kurzer Besuch nach getaner Arbeit auf einer Dienstreise.

Debió su celebridad a ser la sede principal del culto de Deméter y Perséfone, y a los misterios celebrados en honor de estas diosas, que se llamaban Eleusinia, y continuaron siendo considerados como los más sagrados de todos los misterios griegos hasta la caída del paganismo.
