Join us for 2023 CARNIVAL in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! We went to Rio to see this famous celebration, immersing ourselves in blocos and samba-dancing the night away at the Sambadrome. We were swept away by the hurricane of Brazilian passion and found ourselves scrambling to keep up.

In the days leading up to Ash Wednesday, Rio transforms into a boundless festival with neighborhood block parties (blocos) around every corner. The highlight for us was definitely the Sambadrome Competition which truly lives up to its title as The Greatest Show On Earth.

Midnight is early for us haha. 11pm is usually the time people get ready to leave the house to party hahaha. And to answer the question about what floats have to do with samba. Each parade has a theme and tells a story. It's not random. The floats work as allegories within the theme and it all fits together; song, costumes, floats, choreography... The good thing about watching it on TV is that the commentators explain everything as it happens so it all makes sense. But obviously, it doesn't compare to seeing it live.
