An online teaching certificate course is NOT as good usually as an offline course, but an online certificate will suffice for most of the big online ESL teaching companies.

I feel the same as you about certificates. I’ve been in Spain for 2.5 years with nothing. However I found an opportunity to get my TEFL this summer while working for a summer camp in Italy. So I was like 😍😍, applied and got accepted! So that’s how I’ll be spending my summer 2019!

Great video, Carli. As a ten year veteran of Beijing, I feel I would offer a warning about getting the cheap Groupon certificate. It is being accepted now, but by Dec. 2020, all schools have to prove the teacher has a "recognized" = 120 hour certificate. I taught adjunct for ASU in their huge ESL department (which is actually a privately run program that pays ASU for the physical space) with a fabulous faculty who really know their stuff. Their certificate will pass every test the Chinese government has. I am pretty sure you get 7 months to complete it online, and it will be time well spent because you actually learn multiple techniques and strategies/methodology for dealing with the particulars of teaching ESL vs teaching English to native speakers.

Thank you so much for this helpful video! 😍 I have a question though... I speak English fluently, but I’m not a native. I wonder whether that disqualifies me from getting the TEFL without first having an English proficiency certificate? 😐
When buying the TEFL course on Groupon, did you have to prove that you’re a native in order to proceed to the course/get the certificate? If yes, how did they actually check whether you’re a native speaker?

How long does the Arizona State Univ. course take to complete?
I am interested in teaching English to adults online.

Other than the Cambridge CELTA or the Trinity CertTESOL, the only TEFL/TESOL course I would take is the Arizona State University TESOL Certificate. A lot of English academies will not accept a 120-hour certificate that´s not worth its weight in salt. If you can get your TEFL in 2-4 hours; you really don´t hold a valid TEFL certificate.

Hi Mitch! I have signed up for a 7 Day trial free TESOL course with ASU but I haven't finished my course just yet. Will my effort and materials that I have submitted would go in vain if I didn't continue with it if I paid for the course fee in a later time? Please enlighten me. Thanks.
