Captain America Vs Thanos: How Cap Held Back the Mad Titan in Infinity War
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never seen a villain like Thanos. He's one of the few antagonists to win, and no Avenger level threat has succeeded on such a large scale. Without using the Infinity Stones, Thanos beats the Hulk; with only the Power Stone and his children, he brings the Asgardian race to near extinction and with only four stones, he defeats most of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Iron Man. These feats along with his mission make him one of the most threatening villains of the MCU; however, despite his strength and desire to finish his divine purpose, Thanos is held back briefly by Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War.

After making his entrance in Wakanda, Thanos uses the stones to phase Bruce into a wall, toss Captain America aside, disable Falcon's wings, crush Rhodey, knock back Okoye and Bucky and trap Black Widow under rocks. He also knocks out Black Panther with a single blow. The Avengers, in this moment, are pests to Thanos that he can swat away; however, Cap proceeds to fight. He lands a few blows, even hitting Thanos square in the jaw. When his hits prove pointless, Cap then grabs the Infinity Gauntlet and tries to keep Thanos from getting to Wanda. While he is able to keep the Mad Titan back for a bit, Thanos knocks him out. It makes sense that Thanos can overcome Captain America; however, it doesn't make as much sense that Cap can hold him back for even a minute.

While Iron Man, the Hulk and Doctor Strange go toe to toe with Thanos, they all falter in Infinity War. Meanwhile Wanda and Captain Marvel have fought solo against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, getting him on the ropes, but he eventually breaks free. He is not unbeatable, as Endgame proves, and when the heroes team up, they can hold Thanos back for some time; however, it's a marvel that Cap held Thanos back at all.

Captain America does have super strength; however, compared to heroes like the Hulk and Thor, two Avengers who were bested by Thanos, his strength is a fraction of theirs. Furthermore, unlike Strange, Wanda or Captain Marvel, he lacks cosmic powers or magic. Even Tony Stark has an upper hand with a suit that grants him enhanced strength and acts as a personal armory. Captain America only has his strength, shields and will power, and it's the latter that allows him a chance to restrain the Mad Titan.

"I think in that moment, Thanos is impressed by Steve's will," Christopher Markus says in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "He's like, 'I can't believe this guy who apparently has no powers is trying this.' He's almost like, 'Really? Really?'"

It's clear throughout Infinity War and Endgame that Thanos is a man who admires those driven by strong convictions, as he says to Doctor Strange, "the hardest choices require the strongest wills." This sentiment carries over in his battle with Tony. Despite being prepared to kill him, Thanos respects him because Tony understands what's at stake and shares a similar determination with Thanos, despite the two being on opposite sides. While Steve and Thanos do not share any words like Tony and him do, Thanos looks at Cap the same way.Whereas many beings surrender to Thanos out of fear and others stay down, whether they physically can't get up or they know it's impossible to beat him, Steve, despite the pain and the odds, does not fold. He does what Cap does best, and he fights until he no longer can. Fans have seen this side of him since his debut in Captain America: The First Avenger.

What makes Steve Captain America is not just the super soldier serum. Captain America is a guy who fights the bullies, who doesn't trade lives and who will be the last man standing. Thanos, like the fans who've seen Steve evolve over the years, knows this man is a man of conviction, just like him.

He sees this in Infinity War when Cap is willing to keep fighting, and in that moment, Thanos takes a few seconds to admire a man prepared to do anything for his mission; afterall, Thanos can afford it since he has the upper hand with the Time Stone. In Endgame, Thanos would once again be faced with Cap's unwavering determination as he wields Mjolnir, and, after his shield breaks and his allies seem to be nowhere, Steve still stands tall and is ready to fight, just like Thanos would do if someone stood in his way. Due to Steve's determination, Thanos falters in Infinity War, and it's that same determination that is key in his defeat in Endgame.
