You can replace the block under the pressure plate with a waterlogged inverted stair or waterlogged slab on the top half of the block. The pressure plate mechanism still works and the crop stays hydrated, too.

The neat thing is it looks like it should be able to scale up. The trap is "closed" only when a rabbit is on the pressure plate. add more interior space and you can have more rabbits standing on the not-plate area with the door open, which then closes any time one attempts to escape. Probably ends up with rabbits glitching through the door anyway though.
