I remember Canon purist saying Nikon will never be a video camera and Nikon was beaten by Sony with the alpha. Nikon was like bet.

Nikon did a great job with balancing its profit margins to the level where then can swallow a fish as big as RED. This could also mean they have serious plans on cinema lenses, which means the renaissance of Cine-Nikkor subbrand.
As we see that nowadays the decline in stills and raise in videos production, they want to catch a train - and they did a great job with Z bodies, but it's obvious serious makers didn't consider Nikon as a competitor. They will now.

This is perhaps the most exciting news in the cinema world that I have heard for a long time. Whilst for lots of reasons, I have been a Sony user (cinema line, not Alpha), I have grown a little weary of the nonsense that also comes with Sony's superb technical abilities and have really been a Nikon fan the whole time. It was a pity that Nikon sort of went through what I called an 'invisible patch' until they came out with their mirrorless cameras. I only wish this had happened about 5 years ago. It will naturally take time for Nikon to find its way and strategy with Red and what form that might take. Interestingly enough, I did have some suspicions that Nikon would foray into the cinema world with a dedicated cinema camera, but I hadn't envisaged something like this. It does however, make a whole lot of sense. A bit of disruption in the marketplace is always a good thing and Nikon have really put the cat amongst the pigeons with this announcement.

Proves that Nikon Z mount was Cinema ready and suitable for Medium format

I think the companies are run very differently from each other. We will see some important co-branding where it makes sense and technology sharing. Think Nikon Z9 II with REDCODE RAW for an extra $500 over a regular Z9 II. This news is defiantly making waves in the Canon headquarters. I’m a canon user and have been frustrated with their RF mount options (lack of third parties; slow release of important lenses; no mid-range innovation). So this might seal the deal for me to go Nikon in the future.

This gives Nikon access to 'filmmaker influencers' which will help them market the Z9/Z8/Z6III to videographers much better.

Wouldn't it be an amazing thing both for existing Z8 and Z9 owners, and as a sales incentive for the Z line cameras if Nikon updated the firmware to allow for internal RED codec raw. It is a total joy to grade red raw footage from what little playing I did with sample footage. It seems to offer a lot of elasticity without falling apart.

I bet it would mean Z8 and Z9 take over the prosumer camera market if they did that.

What I'm interested in is Nikon medium format stills camera. Their lens mount is already bide enough to cover medium format sensor sizes. That'd be awesome!!!

With so many streaming services, there have never been so many opportunities as an independent film maker and I imagine pro-grade movie cameras are becoming a significant chunk of the market. The fact Nikon feel this is a good investment to them speaks volumes...

We all have our brand preferences but any moves like this is good for competition... Which is good for us all. It's good to see.

Wow this news is quite insane. I remember the Red Raw drama being a thing, I guess this means Nikon now owns the "license" for Raw?

Amazing news, and a bold move for a traditional Japanese company! I first had to check if it was April 1. already... ;)
Panasonic should do something bold like this, or push much deeper cooperation with DJI or Blackmagic, we need even more competition in cinema!
