Why do dogs have floppy ears?

FLOPPY EARS HELP SNIFFING!

There’s a reason for floppy ears!

Did you know that floppy ears are believed to be floppy to help dogs smell?!

“Huh?” I hear you say!

It’s true! When a dog has their head down sniffing, their ears fall forward…. and those big ‘nose curtains’ act as a fan to funnel the scent up to the nose area.

(Which is called the rhinarium! Imma say that word again and again because I love it).

Which is why most of those dogs we’ve bred to primarily use their nose for us, like beagles, bloodhounds or vislas have floppy ears.

It’s no coincidence that the 2 come together.

Ps that doesn’t mean that pointy ears can’t do scent work!!! All dog snoots are superbly powerful.

They can detect a teaspoon of sugar in 2 Olympic size swimming pools… that’s with or without the ‘nose curtains’ 🤭
