TRIP REPORT | Problems Over North-Atlantic | Punta Cana to Zurich | EDELWEISS Airbus A340

Edelweiss Trip Report flying from Punta Cana to Zurich onboard one of the Edelweiss Airbus A340-300 on a lovely winter day.

A weird flight from Punta Cana to Zurich onboard the Edelweiss Airbus A340-300. I guess that's the best way to describe this 9-hour cross of the Atlantic. We used the new Punta Cana terminal, which has 2 terraces that are absolutely amazing for planespotting. We could see some planes from really close. It should be compulsory for every airport to have a terrace like these ones!

It was a nice experience as flying on the almost extinct A340-300 is always special. However, I found the Edelweiss seat configuration pretty uncomfortable. The seats feel very tight and the legroom is quite poor. On top of that, in the very middle of the Atlantic, a passenger completely fainted and the crew had to seek urgent medical assistance from doctors onboard. For some minutes we were with some very high chances of a medical emergency diversion.

About the flight itself, we took off late from Punta Cana. I was tracking the airplane flights the day before and I could already see that we were going to be delayed: 24 hours in advance! The tight schedule that Edelweiss gives to the planes made our A340 carry delay for 4 days in a row, unable to recover it because of the very tight turnaround times.

The catering service... well, it wasn't bad, but it was not the proper service of an airline that should be a leisure version of SWISS. The food was reduced and many of the drinks were only available for purchase. 2-hours before landing there was a small cold breakfast service. To be honest, although it wasn't anything amazing, I was expecting much less from the breakfast one.

Hola. Yo tuve la oportunidad de volar en 2016 la ruta más larga de Iberia a Santiago de Chile en dos de sus A340-600 que, por desgracia, ya no están operativos. Gran avión. Hermoso de estética y cómodo en su configuración en IB. Una gran experiencia en el último de los cuatrimotores clásicos.
