Written by Len Barry and Bernie Binnick. Arranged by Tom Sellers and produced by John Madara.

Some of the best in the Philadelphia corner of the music business grace the label on this record.

Len Barry went to #2 in 1961 with “Bristol Stomp” as the leader of the Dovells. In 1965, he was back at that position with “1-2-3”, a song Len co-wrote with his producers, Johnny Madara and Dave White.

After spells at RCA and Amy, Len was with Scepter in 1969 but still working with Johnny Madara.

Len wrote “Keem-O-Sabe” with Bernie Binnick, one of the owners of Philadelphia’s Swan Records. Bernie put together a studi group named the Electric Indian, which included Daryl Hall and musicians who went to be members of MFSB. They recorded an instrumental version, produced by Len Barry, which reached #16 in 1969 on UA.

Just like with "Suicide is Painless", "Soulful Strut", and "The Horse", my dreams are shattered realizing that a beautiful instrumental like "Keem-O-Sabe" was originally recorded with lyrics.

The Electric Indian Keem O Sabe done beautifully and taking it out of the instrumental stage to singing is top notch for us fans of this song, Thanks

Unique. Len does some great singing here, almost bordering on jazz. One of his best vocals, forceful and very, very different.

I've been looking for this one for years! Thanks for posting it. This may finally be the time for me to start the playlist I've been contemplating of vocal versions of songs better known as instrumentals.

I never knew this song had lyrics. I believe the hit by Electric Indian was produced by Len Barry if I'm not mistaken.

Which version was released first? This or the instrumental? Did this song make the charts?
