Collecting AMERICAN CHESTNUT Seed!?

This is a video from the beginning of this month, we collected some seed and nuts from an almost mythical being. The American Chestnut! These trees are probably 98% American Chestnut genes, the remaining percentage being attributed to other Asian varieties that are resistant to the Chestnut Blight that has struck Eastern North America in the early 20th century.

These trees carry the genes of the incredible American Chestnut, which once dominated the East Coast with it's enormous size and abundant yields each and every year. These trees were the redwoods of the East, growing over 120 feet tall at times and commonly being 10 feet around.

We are very excited (As you may be able to tell) to be able to work with these trees and this species! What an honor it is to be around them!

Thanks so much for watching and please subscribe if you like what you see on our channel! Please share with other tree lovers, family and friends.

That frost chestnut tree looks to be around 35 years old based on the apparent truncates diameter. There is a stand of the Lipofsky strain of chestnut on the Brunswick Town Commons in Brunswick Maine. They are a bit bigger and we’re planted about 45 years ago. I worked for Lipofsky in the 1960s.
