How to Get Rid of Umms and Ahs

1. Why is it important to remove ums and ahs in our presentations? (0:42)

It ruins our credibility if we don't. Think about a presentation you've seen recently. Point 1, 2 and 3... and then there's an um. When someone shares an idea, we have 2 separate realities; the first one is the conscious one who's looking and taking notes, but the 2nd piece is the subconscious judgment of that same speaker; I almost don't BELIEVE what they're saying when they keep saying ehhhs and ahhs EVEN if your content is 10/10. This is how to get rid of umms and ahs.

2. The Magic of Cutting Midway. (1:53)

Replace your UMs and AHs with silences. Cutting Midway is a strategy I teach clients on how to apply this very quickly to get results. Let's say we use the sentence: "John loves apples; he has one everyday to keep the doctor". Let's roll that same sentence THREE different times to see the difference between getting rid of filler words. You'll notice as the technique progresses; the speaker is slowly getting much better at getting rid of ums and ahs. This is how to get rid of umms and ahs.

3. WHY is getting rid of ums and ahs so challenging for us? (4:20)

Let's go back to high school. That's where we learn how to speak, and we get worried during those presentations so we say EH, AH, UM to save ourselves time. But this habit, learned at a young age, has stayed with us for a long time until today. That's why it's tough to UNLEARN this habit, but it's NOT impossible. We can do it with some practice and I believe in you. This is how to get rid of umms and ahs.
