Beijing is the first city in history to hold two Olympic Games: the 2008 Summer Games and the 2022 Winter Games. What could be a first-rate propaganda move looks set to be a resounding failure.

We are not only talking about the enormous cost, both economic and environmental, that these games will have. We also have to add the coronavirus and the fact that they will have no spectators. But, above all, the political situation is very different today than it was 14 years ago.

Beijing 2008 was the gala presentation of a giant that had just awakened. But what image will China offer to the whole world in Beijing 2022? We tell you all about it in this video.

I'm an expat living in NE China. I arrived here the week before the 2008 Olympics. The locals were rapt! Olympics this. Olympics that. It was like a fever. The song, "Beijing Welcomes You" was blaring from every mall, shop, restaurant, and bar. When the opening ceremonies began there wasn't a car moving or a single person walking on the streets. The entire nation was sitting in front of whatever TV screen they could find. Every conversation over the course of the games was about the games. Everyone knew the names of every athlete and were seemingly experts on every event.

14 years on and the only people here really talking about the games are the wumao warriors on social media. During the opening ceremonies, the streets were as busy as usual. All anyone else really seems to care about is getting their hands on a panda mascot doll.

From the point of view of geopolitics, it doesn't matter what kind of government China has. Even if it had a democratic government with the perfect human-rights record, it would still be a competitor to the US, and anti-China propaganda would still occur.

Ofc, I don't agree with what China is doing to Uyghurs, and other stuff, but I also don't like how Western media doesn't cover the same way other conflicts and issues.

Interesting. We have hosted the games with the greatest goodwill and hospitality. We wanted to be a good, friendly host to all who visited. We tried our best to provide everyone with the best venues, the best food, and the best services from the volunteers who made relentless efforts to serve. Most athletes were happy, and that's all we cared about. We were happy to see that athletes from all over the world compete in their top form and have a good time. We played clips of athletes of different ethnic backgrounds cheering and huggging together on the closing ceremony, as a friendly gesture during such a time of confrontation and divide between countries and blocs.
Right, we might not have the best govt in the world, and this country is far from perfect. But we hosted this Winter Olympics with utterly benign intentions. And if you wish to automatically politicize, vilify and demoralize anything and everything we did, and if you want to consider everything we did 'fake' just because of what kind of people you think we are, then shame on you. There is some kind of propaganda in my country, of course. But you have fell victim of the Western counter-propaganda that tries every possible means to slander China.

I think some arguments are really biased. I don't expect it from you. Chinese vaccine was used by more people than anywhere in the world. Those are effective in truth. I can say that due to personal experience. What about West boycotting Saudi Arabia and India due to genocide of Kashmiri and houthis in Yemen. Please make balanced analysis with facts as you previously did.
