Exploding Capacitor

Watch how a small voltage can destroy a tantalum capacitor and light it up in flames. Watch out for these little guys, connected the wrong way they can do some damage to your fingers. Lesson learned - don't build or work on circuits with the power connected, even with low voltages!

I'm amazed at how spectacularly that went down. That's crazy

That tiny thing makes such a big boom already? Now where's my soldering Iron and that high voltage Powersupply I had lying around?...

Tantalum capacitors tend to become hard short circuits when they fail, dragging down a power supply line and causing that circuit to fail to function. I have sometimes used the effective but brutal troubleshooting method known as "fault clearing with high current" in order to clear the short. The shorted tantalum capacitor blows open, it smells bad, it makes a nice little BANG, and the circuit starts to work again with the short cleared. Replace the remains of the capacitor with a fresh one and now the circuit is back to working condition The trick is not to over-voltage the circuit, but give it enough current that it burns through the badly shorted tantalum capacitor.

What's that small buzz sound at 1:27?

Question- after the capacitor burn/explode, does it become short circuit or open circuit? Thanks.

Took an electronics course in community college a while back, one day when building a circuit I idiotically had my fingers still on the capacitor when I flipped the power switch... Felt like I held a firecracker.

Very good video. Curious what were the ratings on the tantalum cap?

I just had one of these blow up on me on an old CGA card, though instead of smoke, it went up in a shower of sparks

Tantalum --> Tantralum --> Tantrlum --> Tantrum Capacitor, i.e. the capacitor throws a huge tantrum if you overload them this is by design hence the name

does the battery stilll safev when the capacitor gone

big boom for only 9V. That's nuts.

Try an experiment with a blue or white light led without using a series resistor and a new 9 volt battery. Let's see if it turns it from light emitting diode into a dark emitting diode? Again use a normally open switch for safety sake. Next we'll try something interesting with a mos-fet. Good idea?

The smoke is supposed to be blue.... I feel I've been lied to.

What happens when 100v 65uf electrolytic capacitor is replaced with 250v 10uf electrolytic capacitor in 9watt led bulb?

I guess there's a reason why these are called 'tantrum' capacitors...

I've had a number of unwanted failures with tag tants, I find them to be unreliable.

They have no vent so they pop went they began to out gas.

When I was nine I was an idiot and shoved a 0.1 amp resistor directly in the 240v receptacle it made a loud bang and my power went off after that it turns out I killed the rcd
