You left a lot out of this story. I read this for the first time back when I was in High School in the Mid 1960's. Both of them developed some medical problems. Barney had warts to grow in a circle pattern around his man parts. Barney would not open his eyes after they were first taken. You are correct. This story is changed every time I read it or hear it told again. I believe it really happened.

They remind me of my friend and myself. He was such a straight arrow.
We were giving a young lady a ride to work in the next town, at about 10 or 11 oclock at night in July.
We were driving past the local, privately owned airport and I spotted 4 orange lights in the sky over the airport. I excitedly told Jim to pull over, there's real UFOs over the airport. As I watched the lights, which were in a scattered pattern, they formed into a triangle, with the lower, right light of the triangle missing. I told Jim that he had to pull over and see them. He didn't even turn his head. He said that it was just the airport lights. I told him, no, that I had seen those airport lights all my life, and it wasn't them. He said that of course it was just airport lights, and that he didn't want the young lady to be late for work.
She was wedged into the corner of the very dark backseat. I turned to tell her what I was seeing, to at least get her to look. She was listening to loud music in her earbuds, and couldn't even hear me.
I was frustrated as we drove by them and I had no other witnesses of what I was seeing.
We were driving along side of a river. A little later, up the road, in a clear area, bigger than day a large glowing object moved slowly across the river, rather low. It moved in front of us across the road. There was no mistaking that it was a UFO. It was moving past us in the direction of the airport. I have no idea why they decided to form into a triangle, but I got the impression that it was the 5th one of the group, that somehow was a little late, but that it was the 5th craft that was to fill in the bottom, right spot of the formation.
My extremely skeptical friend admitted, with awe, that I had been right, and that he had seen a real UFO. I felt so vindicated, and was very glad to now have a witness.
The young lady was still completely lost in her music. Later, her sister told me that she didn't think that she could have coped with seeing it, anyways.

I think Betty and Barney Hill experienced something legit... but Betty's story(s) just got worse and ridiculous over the years; I think she just enjoyed the attention too much.
What she said about it within the first year or so is probably pretty close to real memory, but don't listen to anything she said years later... she got pretty nuts.
