Are we Africans: Yes, however Africa is diverse.


Are Somalis Arabs: Absolutely *not.* However they are minorities that lives in Somalia that do speak Arabic, but they’re not actual Somalis rather

minorities that lives in the country through I.e refuge or business reasons.

Somalis don’t speak Arabic as their mother tongue. They speak Somali, a Cushitic language that is distantly related to Arabic. Just because Arabic is an official language in Somalia it doesn’t mean that they are Arabs. By this logic Algerians are French.

Short: Somalis are Somalis. And yes we African but not Arabs.

You can't categories Somalis being either being Arabs or Africans.

Let us be clear, there is no race and ethnicity that is called African, as there is no race and ethnicity that is called European or Asian. But these terms African, European, Asians, and so on. describes a bunch of races, ethnicities and identities.

So, as Somali being one of the African biggest race and ethnicity and being part of the African identity, we are 100% African. And I don't see any reason to question this fact.

But the question of are Somalis Arabs, it is like asking if French are English, I mean how so.

Of course we share a lot of things, like tradition, religion as Somalis are muslim. we lived next to each other for so many decades. We have interracial relationships, as there is in every two neighboring races.

And about the Arabic language, first Arabic language is not a language for one ethnicity, it is a language for the muslim civilization, for example the most well known Arabic language grammar Scholars are not Arabic. And Somali people being Muslim they consider the Arabic language as part of their Muslim identity, that is why Arabic language is learn from childhood so to easily read the Quran and understand the religion and not to be Arab, Somalis have one of the most beautiful and poetic language and they adore it.

So, to summarize.
Somalis are Somalis.
Somalis are African.
Somalis are not Arab, but we share a lot of things and the Arabic language.

I am Somali living in Europe. We consider ourselves African because we are originally from this continent. But our culture, our language, and our skin color distinguish us from other Africans. We have things in common with the Arabs of the Middle East because we have lived alongside them for centuries. But we also distinguish ourselves from the Arabs because, for example, the language is quite different. So, to the question of whether we are Arab or African, I would answer this: we are different, not better or worse, just different.
