Learn an easy way to make pants that actually fit

#sewing #howtosew #sewingtutorial #fridaysews

Hi Everyone and Welcome Back to My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing project.

So this video is going to be little different because I am not making a finished garment. Rather I am spending an entire video showing how I use a basic pattern to come up with a guideline of how I need to alter all pants patterns to fit my shape.
I hope it is helpful!
~Marie

Sewing pants is so easy but getting that fit right especially when you get older can be such a booger! This is really very helpful.

Really interesting, thank you.
I used to belong to the English Civil War Society and made all my own costumes on as little money as possible! I used to use old sheets to make the initial pattern and fit it inside out. I was then able to use this as the lining which made it warmer and no one could see if I had to add sections.

This is one of the best pants fitting tutorials i’ve seen. You demonstrated it very well.
I could easily follow along without ever having to wonder _what the heck is she talking about!_
Thats the best kind of tutorial in my book!

You are 100% correct. Sizes and measurements are just numbers. Commercial clothing and sewing pattern sizes are so bizarre the numbers don’t mean anything. And they’re not standard across brands! No one wants to admit they’re a size ‘whatever’ so the manufacturers have pandered to everyone’s vanity by playing with the numbers. Today’s size 16 is yesterday’s size 8. It’s ridiculous.

This just popped up as i was reaearchinng patterns. Ive sewn forever just my old body changed. Love your vintage machines! I have 10. I was taught to measure pattern between sewing lines like at waist between seams to compare to your own. Even in same companies ive never foound them match envelooe or pattern to pattern! And ive sewn with patterns since age 10! Im 68 now! I mostly upcycle tops. I do same. Buy big alter down.

THANK YOU!!! I am 70+ yrs old and have been sewing for almost 50 years...always avoiding pants. I even had a "tailor" make me a linen pant suit once -.a total fail due to ill fitting pants. This was GREAT information and instruction! I feel I will be able to try making my own pants again now.🤞

There was a time... when I could take a pattern, pick my size cut it out and sew it and it would fit. Not anymore. I now have a scoliosis in my lower spine so without a 'cookie' in my left shoe my left leg appears shorter than my right leg. (Too many falls, compression fractures and age have all contributed to this.)
I am encouraged by this video. My goal is to create a pattern that fits me. Sometimes... rather most times... I am impatient and get discouraged when sewing pants that fit me.
You are a very good teacher. You explain things so well.
Thank you... I am going to attempt this in the new year.

making my own pants that fit would be a dream come true. I have my own odd shape. No hips and fat inner legs. menopause, belly and butt. so I'm really just afraid of making pants. All of the hype about it being so difficult, has made me put it off. I can make the heck out of a dress. But I've never tried pants. looking at numbers is a struggle for me. I'm glad you addressed that early on. they're just numbers.
your videos give me so much so confidence! Thank you so much for the time and energy you put into these classes. Because that's what they are. You addressed all the things in the books

I need this flexible ruler, the crotch fitting is the only reason I refuse to construct my own pants. You’ve opened a new world to me.

I just happened to have stumbled across ur videos. I learnt more in this one video about self fitting than anywhere else. Thank you so much for actually 'showing' how this is done. I'm going to check out more of your videos and add u to my list

I have personal pattern blocks that I drafted when studying fashion design at AIC; cf/cb bodice, trouser, jeans, skirt, and sleeve. But, I've lost over 12 lbs and I have to update all of them. I'm starting with the trouser and; I have to say, this video is more comprehensive then my classes. The teacher had us leave the fly open and tailor. Keeping the side open looks so much better. I actually love making trousers, but you're right that fit is more important and therefore more finicky and can be very discouraging for some people. Thanks for sharing.

I am that person that had a disaster with my last go around with trousers. This was so very helpful thank you! Also you are adorable.

I'm looking forward to seeing the actual pants constructed. I have been wary of making pants, except for pajama pants. With them there is very little to adjust.

So enjoyable to see you walk us through these steps. I say to myself that measuring is just math. Sorta makes it less personal. Especially when you end up with a great pair of pants you made yourself. Can’t wait to see how your wool trousers turn out.

This is far and away the best video on pants fitting I’ve seen. In particular the explanation about the crotch seam was spot on for those of us who are not an average size 12 (Australian size) and look like a stick insect. I’m 5’5” and apple shaped and at 71 my chances of losing a ton of weight are slim to none. So, finding a pants pattern that fits is problematic, or at least it was until I discovered indie patterns. Although I can get patterns in larger sizes now I still have to make adjustments to the crotch and you have just made that a whole lot easier! I have a better understanding of what to change and where to do it, so thanks for that! Much appreciated, love from down under xx
