CIA recruits Russian spies on social media and the darknet | DW News

Apparently the CIA thinks there has never been a better time to recruit spies in Russia. Russian spies. The US intelligence agency is using social media and the darknet to extend an invitation to Russian citizens who may have access to state secrets to get in touch. The invitation comes in the form of a video that speaks to Russian who love their country, but not where it's going.

Months before Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, the US went public with intelligence that suggested the Kremlin - despite its denials - was planning to start a war. In February 2022, that intelligence proved to be spot on. It is impossible to measure the value of intelligence, but ask any general from Berlin to London to Washington and they will tell you: better to have too much intel than not enough.

Dmitri Alperovitch is a cyber-policy and security expert. He's been a special advisor to the Pentagon and now advises Homeland Security.

Regardless of your thoughts on the CIA, you got to admit it's funny seeing CIA put out ADs like that so boldly.

I mean, even if that "ad" doesn't even net any meaningful intelligence, the distrust and finger pointing it further causes is already worth it.

Some speculate that the state of the FSB as of now is a kin to that of a snake cage. A massive blame game is playing out.

I feel like this will be an ad for Tor as well… To make it clear, US and NATO partners have been deanonymizing this network by using/controlling the nods on entry and exit for the past few years(Russia is usually not an entry point, so they can’t do that _usually_).

I taught they've been doing this since the dawn of the global internet.

Wasted opportunity on the side of the host to ask his guest how he thinks Russia is trying similar tactics targeted at the West, he may offer some interesting insights.

Obviously Russia does the same stuff. But this is dangerous and sad at the same time for both sides. More people are going to be falling from windows in Russia.
