What does good watermelon sound like? 😔

Signs of a good watermelon, and a yummy watermelon recipe at the end
- It has a sun spot (a white/yellow spot somewhere on it)
- When you pick it up, it’s heavier than it looks. The heavier, the better. That means there’s more juice in it.
- I’ve only heard of this one, not put it into practice, so take it with a grain of salt: the brown scarring you sometimes see means it’s more ripened I believe? So if it has that, take it.

More signs I learned from the comments, thank you guys :)
- Rounder and darker watermelon is better
- More saturated stripes (can clearly see difference between dark and light stripes)
- You don’t want the sunspot to be super dark yellow, because that means it’s overripe

Watermelon Lemonade Slushie

Ingredients
- 230g watermelon
- 5 tbsp of sugar OR 2 1/2 tbsp of honey
- 2oz of lemon juice (can add more to your tastes)
- 6-8 large cubes of ice

Just blend that up in your blender, sometimes adding another oz of water or lemon juice helps the ice blend better. But it’s very delicious :)

I worked in a grocery store cutting fruit, including watermelon, for 3 years. I also have no gosh darn idea what the difference between what a good watermelon and a bad watermelon sounds like 😭

Hollow means empty. So what people mean is you knock on it to see if it sounds empty or not

I always look for some scarring or marks on the skin on one side. That indicates it was allowed to sit and ripen and make it sweeter. I forgot who taught me to look for those marks but it has never failed me.

It’s actually about appearance and believe it or not, the uglier the watermelon with more of the rough brown patches, the sweeter it is!

One thing I learned from my local produce stand is if your watermelon still has a stem on it then it falls off when you pick it up by it or even if you give it a little and it comes off, that’s how you know it’s right because it’s starting to soften

I work produce, so maybe i can help, basically when you knock on it you're NOT supposed to hear hollow, it should sound like you're knocking on a Plastic bucket full of water, that means it has more juice, and is ripe! Another thing to look for is yellow spots, not too yellow, the spot should be about the same shade of yellow as homer simpson. totally unrelated but buying a watermelon when you're feeling down seems like a much better idea (Financially speaking) Than what i do, Because when I'm feeling down i spend FAR too much money on Lego and action figures. thank you to anyone who read this far! As someone who grew up as a farm-hand, all true to first statements but I have never heard of the brown scarring.

I do know how to hit for the "hollow" sound though, but the best way is to look for the "sun-spot" or spot it laid on the ground. If it is more yellow than white. It should be good, but very dark yellow and it is overripe.

its suppose to feel like its a empty space inside that means its good and if it has a big yellow spot on it its soopah sweet the most hollow is the yummiest and jusiest :D

Look for black bits on the green (it's sugar) look for a big sun spot, look for brown webbing. It's bee trails. Look for the ugly watermelon

Here's ways I choose a good watermelon!

I look on the bottom and look for the *yellowest color, * and look for *darker green stripes.* Also, if you look where it was cut off from the vine, if it's green, don't get it. It was picked too early. You want it to be *brown.* 💖
