This is actually quite interesting and impressive! Thank you for this. I just got the action 5 pro last week and it’s pretty great, but DEFINITELY needs a firmware update.

Here’s my rather long two cents, after testing the A5 Pro for one week:

The camera (till they update firmware) looks like it is shooting in permanent HDR and it looks muddy and soft in the distance in bright sun, especially in the highlights which look blown and have a glow to them. This is something that the ace pro had in its first iteration until they updated the firmware. My guess is that DJI is going to do the same exact thing. This does not seem to happen in DLog and I don’t know why. But in mixed bright light, I plan on shooting DLOG all the time till this is fixed. Also, I’m finding that if you set the white balance manually to a slightly warmer temperature like 5500K, or even 6000 (especially at sunset) it looks better (when in non DLOG). And I turn texture to -1 and NR to -1 and it’s bit less muddy. I set EV -0.7.

In low light (in non super night) the shutter must quadruple the frame rate and the ISO maxed or its jittery.

I am praying that DJI releases a firmware update before the Ace Pro 2 comes in swinging hard. They need to allow a non HDR option in normal color mode, fix super night and up bit rate. Alternatively, for less HDR effects, I can set ISO low. But DLOG is king for now. I think they went overboard with the “13 stops of Dynamic Range”. That’s just HDR. On my GoPro 12, I turn off HDR or I get the exact same issues. And I remember early reviews of Ace Pro 1 saying HDR needed a toggle, and it got it. Let’s hope DJI follows suit!

BTW, the pocket 3 (which I have and love) had similar issues of overblown highlights and overexposure upon first release. They (mostly) fixed it. Fingers crossed, they’ll fix this. Firmware needs to up the bitrate, fix this weird permanent “HDR” in normal 10
bit color mode (or give option to turn off like on GoPro and Ace Pro). They also must improve the AI on Supernight (which is pretty good at the moment…but I find that it’s WAY over-sharpened) and they need to improve overall performance in low light, without tweaks.

Best thing is, I can grade DLog in the DJI Mimo app, which is really cool!

Is there a way to reduce the HDR in normal color mode? Maybe lower sharpness or texture??

Also PLEASE DO A REVIEW OF THE ACTION 5!!!! Your channel is awesome!

PS: Are you using the pocket 3 to record this?

Let me see if I got this right. The idea is shooting with D-Log M, apply the DJI conversion LUT 709 (or whatever is called) and then color grading? I thought that with DJI LUT it would be enough. Cheers!
