Talking about connection: One thing I always tell my pad holders is to not apologize if they mess up the sequence and I whiff, because I'm not always going to land and it's a good check against getting off balance. I've seen drills where the pad holder intentionally drops one of the strikes throughout, just to get the fighter used to missing powershots and exposing if/when they throw themselves out of position.

I can’t even tell you how much this adjustment changed my fight success a few years back. Drill, drill, drill is what we’re taught. Then you start sparring and it never runs that way.

I had a coach holding pads for me who started making me pause mid combo. Or slip, or shuffle back and move back in to finish, etc. Changed my IG forever and I’ll forever be grateful to that coach.

Yes, best advice for landing “combos”. Let’s just say this is how you finally land… significant strikes.

Great vid, so true. You will almost NEVER finish combos as you practice on a bag. Far better to train with this mentality.

To me, the main benefit of practicing combos is to train yourself away from stopping after landing one strike, which can be a common reflex.

Alex pereiras pad work is amazing for this exact thing, he’s not just throwing bombs nonstop there’s constant things his padman makes him have to react and counter. Amazing work to watch. Not just flashy pad work, actually impressive display of his fighting style because it’s exactly how he fights

This is the exact way how I hit the bag Gabriel, very calculated checking kicka, blocking ahots, slipping and getting off my counters off too Gabriel, thank you so much for still covering this, now I am 100% sure I am doing my bagwork right! Amazing video as always! 🗿🥊

I feel like beginners get so caught up on combos… two hits is a combo… if you can throw a jab and follow up with a leg kick or straight then you are doing great.

can you make a video on how it felt when you became a world champion? how it feels to walk around being the champ? how people react when they find out you're a world champion? do you feel superhuman? do you feel like by becoming champion you completed your purpose in life? how does it feel to wake up knowing you're a world champ? and how does your family feel about you being a champ? A day in the life of a world champion fighter video???

Individual combos only take you so far. Building sequences is important because they add more context and realism to training. I’d even argue you should be building sequences around defending strikes, and detailing them with combos so you can practice continuing your offense instead of trading or getting stopped by counter strikes, and practice stifling your opponents office by taking away their tools. They like to return with a good body kick? Jab? Cross? A teep, maybe they like to smother after defending and go to a knee? You throw a combo, apply the right defense after, then go to another combo to punish their counter which will stop them from doing that same counter again. As they run out of counters, they will hesitate when returning or just completely stop. Not only is this how you practice applying pressure but it’s how you take your opponents tools away.

Bazooka joe has the opposite approach in his video. His goal is to be as fast as possible so that the opponent doesnt have a chance to counter, and if they try to, i believe he said “I dare them to try to throw a counter”, because that will obviously create an opening in the opponent. The question is which method to use, and why, and when i suppose. If your opponent is against the ropes, tired, etc, maybe that would be the best tme to use the bazooka joe approach.

If you do this, in the pauses can you like a defense move or anything like that when you’re doing bagwork?
