Why didn’t you chuck that other box in it?

Did you make sure you wired it up correctly? Remember a340’s are electronically shifted, and default to 1, 3, od when not powered. Pretty common. Check power at the shift solenoids when going through the gears. Should be 1st gear s1 on s2 off, 2nd gear s1 on s2 on, 3rd gear s1 off and s2 on, overdrive s1 off s2 off.

Hey Scotty!
This probably doesn't help you too much now as I'm sure filming schedule means this box may already be back together, but if it does help... We recently uploaded videos of our local Auto trans specialist disassembling and reassembling a TH400. Will obviously be some differences to this A340 but it may also give you some valuable tips on how a pro gets the job done 👍

This is the difference between “made for tv” and real. We see your wins and we see your fails. I could see the genuine disappointment on your face when you couldn’t diagnose the issue. I’ve stopped watching these “if this doesn’t sell at auction, we’re gonna lose the shop shows” and tuning into shows like this, The Skid Factory, Nugget Garage ect. Dickie Wallings can eat a

I was talking to my son the other day on what the most valuable thing in the world is and that is knowledge. because of knowledge know how and actually having real world experience and helping other people and doing odd jobs in order to get the experience I needed to work on my vehicles in the electronics, and do a lot of it for free if possible, I've been able to learn a lot about just about everything and anything I need to basically do so I can tackle just about anything in life.

one of the reasons why I started making YouTube videos is really just for fun but then when I found something and basically I purchase a 2001 PT Cruiser I released a series of videos way back when before YouTube check my main Channel down and I showed them all the wonderful events of owning a PT Cruiser and how to fix them.

You're doing an awesome job Scotty. Ya win some & ya lose some, that's part off the game. When you flipped the trans over & all the oil came out, I thought, "Scotty ya numpty, ya forgot to drain the sump first". I know you would have drained the sump, just seemed a lot off fluid to just be sitting in the trans after a sump drain.
Keep the great content coming Scotty, fails & all. I'm learning more than I already know.

Check your voltages on the solanoids. :)

Who knew the Trovlo had a Pandora's Gear Box 👍🏻

Hey man, good on ya for giving her a crack. Try checking the ohms on the two smaller shift solenoids towards the rear of the trans. Should be about 12ohms ish on each one, positive to the plug, negative to the body of the solenoid... Common to fail on the a340/341/aw4 boxes. Worth a try?

Scotty Mate i bet its a solenoid for sure and whats the cost of new ones compared to a rebuild of the auto, especially after testing both autos solenoids, cheers and i hope to see it soon back and on the dyno with 2nd gear fixed, also maybe due to ECU your running is there a prt to do a diagnosis via a port at all with the ECU your using, after all it will give you a fault code for the auto yes/no if electrical maybe, but worth a try right. :)

Good on you Scotty for having a go, sometimes you just need to try.
It'll either work or it won't, and at the end of the day - it was already fucked.
Keep up the good work. 👍

I'd suggest using air pressure and some soapy water in those oil passages to determine how bad the seals are. Solenoids can be tested with 12volts easy enough. This type of problem will certainly be caused by the band not grabbing the drum as 1st and 3rd would be no good if their clutch packs were shot. might find replacing the o rings on the shaft and the servo piston will give you all the drive back. They can be shimmed up and have other mods done to increase the clamping pressure. I'd have no problem going through it but I'm not around the corner. It's more interesting to learn on your own than giving it to someone else.

Are you using the original Toyota Soarer ECU for the engine? Because they are notorious for having leaking capacitors which cause all kinds of issues, including lots of auto issues. The A340 itself is pretty bulletproof, but yeah the ECU is usually the problem. Open the ECU and check the capacitors. It's a pretty cheap fix you can do yourself or send to "the soarer surgeon" he specialises in fixing this stuff.
