Less than 3 min. in, I hear Eric's respect for Derrida's belief in doubt. Which is sound. Waiting, however, for the battle of egos.

Okay, I've listened to most of this. Thanks. To what extent, I wonder, do you think the failure of rapprochement between Searle and Derrida was due to lack of a sense of French traditions in terms of (1) jousting, (2) hyperbole and (3) the agent provocateur. When you mention Tristan Tzara, I'm there. There's melancholy mixed in with the outrageousness. We, in the US, tend toward earnestness [seriousness], puritanism and sex-negative reactions. Perhaps some fixed positions related to cultural traditions made understanding impossible. Searle's ideas about consciousness and Derrida's différance and deferral of meaning seem important. Too bad they couldn't have met on that playing field.
