Maximo Torero, chief economist of the the United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organization, or FAO, discusses the factors behind the rise in food prices across the globe, and how countries should deal with it. Food protectionism is on the rise in the developing world as governments try to safeguard local supplies, and the effects are threatening to spill over into richer economies. Countries are restricting exports to cope with high prices that have been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. Torero speaks on "Bloomberg Daybreak: Australia."

In the 1980s an American visiting Japan why don t they import American rice and meat which is cheaper than the ones grown by Japanese farmers. The Japanese host remind the American that during WW2 the blockaded the island nation and he remember that as a kid he was forced to eat melons with rice for months. That is why Japan was willing to pay for Japanese grown food versus relying on cheaper imports that may be cut off during war or emergencies.

Mr John darry when it comes to trading is what I describe as a trade and investing messiah, it’s impossible to invest with him and not cash out big. He’s the most trustworthy and reliable trader I’ve worked with too.

So food is in short supply, so the answer we need less international restrictions on food exports? Make no sense. We need to produce more food! The only solution is higher food price so farmers can more readily produce more food.
