I have Parkinson’s and peddle drive wouldn’t work for me. Sold my PA14. Went to Vibe SG130 for a while but had to give it up because of the weight. Couldn’t load or unload alone. So I am a land lover now, but enjoy watching your channel and kayak fishing videos. I miss kayaking! Maybe some day someone will make a stable light boat for a 190 pound 6-3 guy with Parkinson’s! Lol keep up the great content bro!!!

Have you every tried the evoke breakaway pedal drive kayak. I seen them for 1000 and seems nice but don’t want to waste money. I want to beat the hell out of it.
If not do you know of a cheap pedal drive kayak that will be reliable and get me off the river no matter the abuse?

Great video for info. I still believe that the Kayak industry will still benefit from using a universal mold for 2 of the best drives so the consumer can have the best of both worlds. Creating an insert that can support both drives is not hard. You just need to 3D scan the dimensions & press print. It might be a plastic insert but it can be gel coated to prevent leaking. This gives the option of propeller or fin PDL.

Pedal kayaks, like all kayaks have their pro's and con's. Price on them is getting off the charts. I can have a top end sit on top made of carbon fiber weighing half as much as a poly peddle. I thought Hobie with this thermo models was going to reduce weight, but that has not really happened. Only a few pounds sperate a Mirage Passport 12 and a Mirage Compass 12 (stripped without drive 73 lbs vs 68lbs for the Compass), yet another thermo kayak, The Eddyline 12FS weighs in at 45lbs. Granted one is a pure sit on top, the other is designed to be reinforced for a peddle drive, so not a true apples to apples comparison, but it does give you an idea of what a thermo formed kayak could be like. Drives break, paddles rarely do. That said trolling on a peddle is huge . Speed: I have peddled/paddled anything faster than a friends Hobie Island 16 with turbo fins. It was in a class by itself. I wished someone would make a thermo formed one, no other kayak on the planet would be needed IMHO. Aliex thanks for another great video!

I am not crazy about pedal kayaks because they cost twice or more than a paddle kayak. I fish lakes and rivers and even at 66 years old and somewhat out of shape, I can still paddle and fish all day. I normally cover 5-8 miles on a normal fishing day on a paddle kayak. Second reason is that the pedal drive takes up valuable cockpit space better used by me for tackle, cooler, etc. I rather have what I want in front of me on my kayak and not a pedal drive. Third reason is the pedal drive adds a huge point of failure to your kayak. Most pedal drive kayaks paddle like crap so if your drive fails out there, you are screwed!

I agree on a lot of what you're pointing out. But like the pelican catch 130 it's light enough, to paddle in the river when I'm in areas I can't pedal. But yet that's enough pedaling it in a little bit deeper water with hands-free fishing. I've had the bigger heavier more stable, and there is just not enough benefits to the heavier boats unless you got a motor on it or you want to stand and do somersaults?
