Vascular occlusion is every clinician's worst nightmare. But are you familiar with the differences between arterial and venous occlusion?

In this week's Aesthetics Mastery Show, Dr Tim dives into how to avoid, diagnose and treat venous occlusion, including discussing the probability that dermal filler could cause a pulmonary embolism, or even blindness due to a venous thrombosis.

Let us know in the comments in you've ever experienced a venous occlusion from dermal filler.

I had a few days ago a weird experience. I wasnt sure if I had an art VO or ven VO or just a big bruise, it looked strange and not typical plus the capillary refill was not really optimal. I massaged it a lot and in the end I think it was a little ven VO with bruise and edema. So thankfull that I could talk to u guys and Dr.Tim took the time to also analyze the situation. 😊. Thank U ThanK u again. I observed the patient dayly and he is recovering very well.

I had Voluma and it bruised badly. Bruise was still present 6 weeks later. I got a large pimple or boil a couple inches underneath and went back to injector. She said all was well. This was in July. Now my eye is sunken in and my eyelid is red and looks dead. My upper eyelid sulcus is deep about a pencil size depth and eyelid is sucked up under orbital bone. No one will help. Don’t know where to go

Thanks for sharing this. You mentioned low viscosity products and the ability to fill up the capillaries - I was wondering if you could comment on low molecular weight skin boosters like Sunekos/Jalupro and the risk of occlusion associated with these? There seems to be mixed information out there regarding whether these carry a lower risk because they are non cross linked or if that doesn’t actually determine risk of occlusion? I worry that they are often injected multiple times in small boluses into the subcutaneous tissue around the mouth where the arteries are quite close to the surface, so it seems something that is touted as being totally safe might actually be quite dangerous?

Are there known cases of lung or heart embolism after accidental injection into a facial vein?
