Oh is this one of those instances when the older you get the more you realise that the 'villain' characters in a movie is actually not a villain and you sympathise with them and the main character(s) is actually a prick?

Legit, the whole group of them felt like fake friends for Troy tbh. Sharpay wasn't a nice person, but she did the smart things to help get Troy a good future

Honestly Troy should have ditched his friends and taken Sharpey’s help. His friends were never super supportive of him and all his hobbies besides basketball. And if he knew how expensive college is he wouldn’t care about “oh it’s unfair that my friends are doing their jobs while I talk to these important people who can get me in college and even a good scholarship and save me thousands and thousands of dollars” he didn’t even need to date Sharpey but at least sing a song with the girl who’s contacts could literally make his future. Plus let’s be honest once you leave for college you loose touch with most of your high school friends.

Gabriela didn't even have a problem with Troy until her friends started pointing things out and filling her head with nonsense causing her to be a little suspicious.

Tbh I don’t get why Sharpay gets so much hate in the first movie she wanted to make sure that the two actually cared about the musical and in the second was really doing a lot of nice things for other people.

Also if you think about it, Troy and Gabriella’s relationship was very toxic. In the first movie Gabriella watched the recording of Troy saying all those things about not caring about the musical auditions. Did she not think about how suspicious that was that her friends conveniently had a recording of it. She should have been like, “Let me go talk to Troy about it and see what he says.” No she leaves him in the dark completely about it. Then Gabriella getting jealous of Troy being with Sharpe while Troy got jealous of Gabriella being with Ryan. Then in the third movie, Gabriella basically gave Troy the ultimatum that if he goes to his DREAM COLLEGE that they basically couldn’t date anymore so then he had to choose GABRIELLA’s COLLEGE.

I never understand HSM why Sharpei was painted as the bad guy like other than going after Troy she was actually one of the only good people in the movies

For real, even as a kid, I would be like "Y'all are mad that people are helping Troy toward a better future?" Like yeah, he had a few oblivious moments, but he was never malicious or fake about it.

Troy literally used Sharpe and didn’t all she ask for was for them to sing together

Life in High School is when Things Need to Change. Troy was just doing what was best for him

Even kid me was like "C'mon Troy, ditch them! They're not even trying to help you they're getting in the way of your future and are way too immature!"

Amen! Finally, someone who finally sees this my way. Troy Bolton’s character was screwed over badly in HSM 2, no wonder Zac Efron never looked back. Troy was always the bad guy. Shame on his friends for not supporting him. It wasn’t Troy’s fault he was getting the promotions.

I feel like all through the three movies, Troy had to give up something to keep his friends or his relationship with Gabriella and the more I rewatch the movies, the solid my theory becomes.
First Movie: Wasn't as deep, but gave up the show to keep his friends. I get it peer pressure will do that.
Second Movie: Few points in that movie, we hear Troys dad talk about him getting a scholarship, I don't believe they were poor but I do believe the scholarship would go a long way for their family, and here's we have Troy walking towards that goal, yes he neglected his friends and girlfriend a bit, but he explained it to them, that he's basically doing it to network, but at the end of the day he is made to look like the bad guy and later gave that up as well because his friends left him and Gabriella temporarily dumped him.

Third Movie: This one really annoyed me, we are talking about your future here Troy, and they really tried to sell that first and only love trope. I mean Gabriella got a scholarship and even left early, Troy was sad at first but he saw that this was a great opportunity for her, pushed her to take it and even surprised her at the campus, which proved to me that they could at least done long distance, but instead of him following his dreams as well, we had him giving up his first choice, so he could be closer to the Gabriella at the end of the movie.
And what I found hillarious was the fact that Chad and his girlfriend, seemed to have come to accept that they would be separated and might have discuss the possibility of breakuping after high school.

Omg Finally I thought I was one of the only people who was annoyed with this in HSM2😂😂. Troy was legit just doing his job and actually got everyone these jobs but because he was getting successful everyone was mad at him like what the hell... (yes I know he only got successful because Sharpay favored him in order to win him over) but still he literally got a basketball scholarship for one of the best colleges and everyone accuses him of betraying them...

Tbh growing up I literally had no idea what was going on and just watched it without paying attention to what they were actually saying.

Um one correction, HE planned the dates that broke the rules for Gabriella. She didn’t want to but he convinced her every time. But yeah the rest of it was right.

Edit: Also Sharpay told the manager to fire the wildcats except for Troy which not okay. Which is why the ”rules” seemed so unfair and also Troy didn’t get in trouble but his friends did. They pissed at the double standard

I think the last red flag is when he said something like

“ I only care about what my friends think of me”.

This is why I never really liked HSM, even as a kid. I loved the music and all, but the characters really bothered me. Of course, you had Sharpey as the popular bully who seemed a little too over the top but turned out to be way more realistic when I got to high school, but everyone else was so freaking fake and addicted to drama. I used to annoy my parents by asking them why each person was acting this way when they all could have just done this or that and had everything work out in the end, and my parents eventually stopped letting me watch the movies altogether until I learned to shut up with the questions.

Honestly, the only characters I liked were Ryan and Chelsey. Yes, Ryan had his moments in the first movie, especially since he was under his sister's control, but he chilled out more than any character in the movie. Chelsey, on the other hand, was constantly mistreated and used by everyone throughout the movies, but she made the most of it by trying to be nice regardless of the way everyone behaved.

Realistically the movie would be super short as troy should be able to see how his friends are complaining when he gives and never ask for anything back I'd say dump them and get new friends who be more grateful to you for not asking anything back from them
