Andis Outliner II Trimmer, $69.99 at Sally's Beauty Supply — This trimmer is great because it gives you a close cut without getting nicks and razor bumps.

Wahl Clipper Cleaner, $4.99 at Wal-Mart — You have to keep your clippers clean to prevent hair bumps and other scalp infections, as well as to prevent the blade from running slow because of excess hair. Just spray the blades and shake the clippers over your sink to get all the hair out. Wipe the cleaner off the blade, and you're ready to go!

Shea Moisture Tea Tree After Shave and Bump Preventer, $7.99 at Target — I use this before I cut my hair to get rid of excess oil on my scalp, and I use it afterward to clean my scalp and soothe my skin.

Kiti Kiti Scalp Treatment, Various Prices on Amazon — This is another product to prevent razor bumps and other scalp conditions, such as fungal infections and dandruff. I used it a couple times a week, and I hardly ever get bumps!

Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Serum, $10.99 at Target — Many traditional moisturizers, especially for natural hair, such as shea butter, castor oil, etc... are too heavy and keep your scalp looking greasy. This serum is lightweight, moisturizing and keeps my scalp feeling supple.

Desert Essence Kinder to Skin Tea Tree Oil, $8.49 at Natural Grocers (or any other health food store) — If you prefer a more natural approach to preventing bumps, then use Tea Tree Oil! It's a natural antiseptic and I use it throughout the week to keep my scalp clean and refreshed.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo, $10.99 at Target — I use this to shampoo after I'm done cutting my hair. I put a little bit on a soft boar hair brush and gently massage my scalp. Again, this, like every product I use, is geared toward maintaining my scalp health. African Black Soap is known as a skin cure-all, and helps alleviate every kind of skin/scalp condition. Plus, it smells good!

Annie Soft Boar Brush, $1.99 at any local hair store — I use this to brush excess hair off my scalp as I'm cutting my hair, so I can see spots I've missed. I also use it in the shower to massage my scalp and get any leftover hair off.

Crystal Elegance Neck Duster, $11.99 at Sally Beauty Supply — This is just another little tool to get rid of extra hair left on your scalp, face or neck as your cutting.

She does an excellent job demonstrating hair type clippers used, the cleaning process, and how to shave hair properly. She then shows you by using the right products to care for your scalp so that you won't endure hair bumps or head acne. Thank you for sharing and teaching all in one!

I know it's been 5yrs since your post but I just want to say thank you, for giving me the courage and confidence to shave my own head after 15yrs of going to a wonderful little Chinese lady who speaks Spanish. I love her to death, and tomorrow I will go to thank her for many years of wonderful service she has provided, even though she did not agree with my choice. I have to find the right gift for her first to show how much I appreciate her.

8/12/2024 for two weeks. I’ve been watching videos and writing down different clippers. This is the first video where she explained and showed every product she used. Based off of this video alone, I just placed my first order for clippers. Thank you, thank you thank you so much MARIAN.

Thank you for this post. I'm tired of giving up $20 almost every 3 weeks. I like my hair very short.

I loved how Marian demonstrated how to cut a woman's hair with clippers. I've been toying with cutting my own hair for several months because I don't always have someone available to cut it on my schedule. I have my hair cut weekly so cutting it myself will save me $75-$100 a month. Thank you for freeing me!!

Thank you for this. You have inspired me to get the Andis clippers. My son told me this two years ago. Doing it myself will save me thirty bucks.

Marian, thank you so much for this video. In 2000, after breast cancer diagnosis, I decided to go bald. For years, I had barbers to give me a very simple shave or sometimes bald fade ! In 2018, I decided that the cuts/shaves was simple and chose to do my own. Having been previously married to a barber, I learned a few things ! I also find it very helpful to shampoo my scalp thoroughly BEFORE shaving it . Marian, you're a very good instructor and your technique takes some of the ' fear ' out of wearing this cut, that many women have ! It takes a considerable amount of practice ( and confidence) to wear this style. Thank you so much for sharing !

Gorgeous! Most of my hair fell out over the last 2 to 3 weeks. I am nervous about shaving my scalp. Your directions are terrific.

Hey girl, Hair stylists have told me I have fine, soft hair. Even when it used to be chemically relaxed the product only needed about 10mins to work. Then, I was left with super flat hair that wouldn't hold volume until the frizzy roots grew back in. So I only had 'nice' hair for about 2 wks b4 it was time to start the cycle over.
I'm a 67 yr old black woman who doesn't want an afro lol. My daughter convinced me to stop colouring and chemically treating my hair. I've shortened it too. Now its natural, grey and dry.
It looks awful!
I prefer smooth soft curls and I enjoy styling it myself. I use product and heat protectants
1. What temperature should my hot comb be set at to rid me of the frizz?
2. How can I get the straight effects to last longer?
OR
A. If I decide to shave it what comb number should I use on the clipper?

Your work is beautiful!
