My High School band teacher refused to write a letter of recommendation for me to go to Berklee, because "that's for people who are good enough to go pro." It lit a fire under me that is still burning - now I pay the mortgage every month with music, circled the world a few times on tour, worked on some films scores, some records, earned a couple of degrees along the way, and am helping build a music program at a university that embraces students who come from non-traditional music backgrounds.

Thank you, Mr. Raymond, for not believing in me. Proving you wrong has been one of the great joys of my life!

I love how Rick names names. He remembers the people who helped him out and takes care that they get recognition.

Rick ... This is probably one of the best motivational videos about believing in yourself and never giving up. You've done well for yourself. Your mom would be proud.

What I wouldn't have given for just one person to believe in me growing up... it scars you for the rest of your life when during those formative years you have no one who has your back... your mum was a treasure Rick

I was a straight A student but came from a very poor family with 10 children. No one believed in me or offered any help. I became pregnant at 18, got married then divorced. Met my now husband who did believe how smart I was and for 50 years we have thrived. I got into computers back in the 70’s and excelled. We are retired and for fun we travel around the world. God is good!

My Mom (RIP) had to go to work at 10am, so the last thing she did before leaving was changing my diaper. I was maybe 6 mo old. She kept my attention by singing, Dum-da da Dum Dum: and I would answer, Dum Dum! She always changed keys each time thru. I developed an ear for learning melodies easily. I saved my allowance at age 12, and bought an acoustic guitar. That led to me buying a repaired bass at age 14, which broke at the nut immediately. But I had no problem learning melodies, and bass chose me. Now at age 74, I still gig: I opened for the Jackson 5 on an 11 gig tour, I recorded with Marvin Gaye (Here, My Dear), Freddie Hubbard (Tuccson Stomp (with my brand new Mu-tron) Smokey Robinson (Oh Be My Love), opened for Buddy Miles and his band, etc. God has been good to me.

I'm a retired educator and heard teachers and counselors say things like that. I was a high school Principal. I always tried being positive with the kids. Told them they could do anything they wanted if they put their mind to it!! Rick, you're a prime example!! Bravo to you!!

My daughter has a serious chronic illness. Shes had to repeat her hs senior year, did community college to get her AA. Transferred to UC Berkeley. Had to leave due to hospitalization and then got cancer. Got well!! Started again at California State Northridge and graduates May 17 at age 40! Persistence. She hasnt let anything stop her. She is going to apply for either a master’s or a phd program this fall. She wants to be involved with kids on the spectrum helping them succeed and get help they need.
Never give up.

I don't think you were bad at school, you just didn't have an interest in those subjects. Once you found your interest you were actually great at school.

I like how the guidance councilor was happy that he was wrong and took nothing away from you when he learned that.

I had a 1.9 GPA in high school. I went to community college at 22, then 4-year college, then got a doctorate in dentistry. Boys/men often aren't ready to sit still when they are younger. Once I knew what I wanted, nothing could stop me. I had a 3.9 GPA in college. I think the strict format of school does a disservice to many SMART people.

My guidance councilor told me that the only place I was going to was Vietnam (this was 1968). He was wrong and right … I got a 1 year scholarship to art school … but had to drop out in my second year due to financial difficulties and was drafted and sent to Vietnam. After the army I applied to school again, got into a better school, and finally (after 10 years of trying) finished my degree. Never give up!

I graduated with a 1.0.
Granted I have Cystic Fibrosis, and was a ward of the state.
My only goal was to make music. I still make music and videos. I've learned a lot from your channel, and the Beato Bundle. Thank you.
