For side dots you can also use the shafts from cotton buds (e.g. Q-tips). I use a supermarket brand and get around 100 for less than £1 (that's a whole career's worth of side dots...)

You can literally use anything for fretboard markers....but the question is...can they help you when it matters? lets say a pitch dark i have removed almost all my plastic side markers from my guitars and i poured a mixture of epoxy and glow in the dark dust to make dots that glow in the dark....you can charge them a bit with a flashlight and they glow for a long time especially the darker the venue
