What some people don't understand is that even though Seita had inherited money from his parents Bank account, there simply was no food in Japan to be had. He is only able to buy food after the Japanese surrender. At that point, the Allied blockade came down and resources that had been diverted to the Japanese military were made available to the civilians. There are even a couple of YT videos claiming that Seita starved his sister to death by not buying her food. They just don't get it. There was no food to be found in japan. That's why things like Seita stealing a couple of tomatoes was a very big deal.

It wasn't his fault. War is tough for everyone, people make rash decisions and sometimes they end up bad, but he was just trying to keep his little sister happy during such a hard time. I can't imagine the guilt he's lived with

Its even sadder when u know that the author dint feed his sister he ate the food first and didn’t thought of other and made the boy in the anime a better version of what he thought he could’ve been at the moment

Except author said he wished he was more like Seita, because he was so hungry too he ate when he saw food, and didnt give his sister enough, like he didnt made enough sacrifice to save her. Of course, he was hungry too, cruel times when no one helped, and he wished he died with her.

No matter how many times I watch this I bawl my eyes out! I love this story it is sad it is very relatable to those who lived during the war times. Makes you feel and think about what people went through. How they had to endure to survive and sometimes it doesn't happen.
