It wasn't just graphics but a borderline immersive-sim level of interaction. The destructible environment is still unmatched by modern games. The guards moved in believable rotations, had different levels of confidence like a Batman game.. It had a lot going on.

The funniest part is that Crytek has embarrassed the meme in Crysis remastered. They added the “Can it run Crysis?” graphics setting to the game

I remember seeing the memes and lamenting I'd never have a PC that could run Crysis.

Then I visited my uncle who was a huge gamer at the time and he showed me his PC. It was all black and red with red LEDs everywhere, water cooled, and had 2 fat Nvidia GPUs in SLI.

Naturally I made the joke "can it even run Crysis?" and he turns the monitor on and it's on the Crysis main menu 😮

I didn't sleep that night.

Crysis 1 is still very impressive today. For example you can shoot smaller trees and they break at the exact spot where you shot them. Then you can chop them down even further, you can pick up the pieces and throw them at enemies etc

I think the biggest problem with Crysis was that it predicted CPUs would keep going up in single core performance, when we instead went multi core, with individual cores being weaker. Hence why for a good amount of time, newer PCs could not max out Crysis 1.

I really wish a lot more people showcased why Crysis was so graphically intense to run and why it was so CPU heavy as well. Form the destructible environments to the new and, at the time, ground breaking physics engine - the game wrecked CPUs. What really nailed it, though, were the amount of Graphical Techniques that Crytek either invented or pioneered, the most famous of which is SSAO.

People test GPUs with Crysis but all microcontrollers are tested based on how well they run Doom :3
