Warner Bros. 2022 Movies May Not Get Same-Day HBO Max Release

The Number 2 theater chain in the world has struck an exhibition deal with Warner Bros., the studio responsible for smashing the theatrical window in 2021 with its slew of same-day HBO Max releases – and it could mean the end of that controversial move on the studio’s part. Warner Bros. announced late last year that it would be releasing every single one of its 2021 new releases on HBO Max the same day that they hit theaters, for a limited time only (after 31 days, the film is no longer streaming on HBO Max and follows a traditional home video release schedule). This announcement rankled many and caused Christopher Nolan, one of WB’s most loyal filmmakers, to lash out against the studio and HBO Max.

With vaccine distribution surging, people are ready to go back to the movies, and Regal Cinemas announced today that it plans to reopen theaters in the United States on April 2nd in a limited number of locations, followed by more locations on April 16th. Those dates coincide with big Warner Bros. releases – first Godzilla vs. Kong then Mortal Kombat on April 16th – and indeed Regal and Warner Bros. have struck a multi-year deal that will change radically in 2022.

This is great news for theatres fans, but I want the 90 day window back

Theaters visits were dropping off before COVID-19. Patient people will still wait 45 days to watch the movie in their own home.... Theaters have become way to expensive for families and I bet the prices will be even higher to make up for lost revenue

I guess the Regal deal is news, but months ago when they announced they were releasing everything on HBO Max, they said it would just be this year

I hope the same day releases remain in 2022 id love to watch The Batman, Tomb Raider 2, Fantastic Beast 3, The Flash, Sherlock Holmes 3, Creed III, and Aquaman 2 at home instead of movie theaters. I’d rather save movie theatres for Universal, Paramount, and Sony Movies only and watch Warner Bros and Disney movies at home.

Wait does this mean the only theaters they will play at are Regal theaters?

Your video seems to say that REGAL will have a 45 day exclusivity for 2022 titles. Are you telling me that AMC will not be able to open the Matt Reeves directed Robert Pattinson starring The Batman film on the same day as Regal??

That is not the way the news read to me. It seems to me that Regal is taking the WB movies in 2021, in exchange for a guaranteed 45 day THEATRICAL WINDOW on 2022 titles, but not exclusively at Regal, rather it will benefit all theaters at that time.

Also, Warner Media always said that it was a 2021 ONLY decision, they are not putting an end to that model... they are simply upholding their word from the initial announcement.

I mean this isn't a surprise. The HBO Max thing was just a temporary thing during covid to at least get some money coming into the company through streaming. There's too much money to be made in theaters. The money from streaming isn't going away. Plus if a movie is successful in theaters, it adds more value to it on streaming.

Well it’s been a year or so since the fall. Thought I’d see what’s been going on and wow Collider didn’t disappoint, just WOW!!! Well here’s a tip of the cap to the past, and the glory days of Movie Talk, Jedi Council, Hero’s, and the Sweatiest of all Sweaties Jon Schnepp!!! I will be forever great full, for a short while I felt like I had a community. Of course that was shattered by political weirdos that live off hate, and can’t handle differing opinions. Those that have such hate in their heart they destroy everything they touch. So thank you for alienating so many of us. Thankfully I have found other places to frequent but truth be told they don’t measure up to the times we could all hold our various political and personal beliefs and just geek out together!!!
