The Dambusters Tribute

A Dambusters 80th Anniversary historical talk about 'Operation Chastise' the Ruhr dams raids by Lancasters of RAF 617 Squadron on the night of 16/17 May 1943.

Includes quotes & references from Max Hastings 'CHASTISE' book, & George 'Johnny' Johnson's book, 'The Last British Dambuster' and also Jonathan Falconer's book: 'THE DAM BUSTERS', plus we discuss the 1955 movie 'The Dam Busters'.

The video opens with a short photo montage from the epic raids.

At the end of the Mohne attack, Gibson told of how he saw the headlights of cars racing down the road in the valley beyond, one by one, being extinguished by the Tsunami...
I forgot to add that Gibson's entire crew including himself were killed in subseqent raids & almost 75% of the crews on the Chastise raids did NOT survive the war. RIP boys. You will never be forgotten. 😔

I lived in Lincolnshire as a child and remember cycling to Scampton as a 9 year old a round trip of nearly 40 miles. I didn't go to see the Vulcans but the gate guardian Lancaster now in Hendon museum, I think. I had seen the film several times previous to my cycling adventure. It's release gave me the interest in Operation Chastise which I have had all of my life. I am not alone! Enjoyable video, liked and subscribed.

I am living 15 km away from the dam at Möhnetal and one of my neighbors (Age 95 !) still remembers the night, when the bomber passed our house on the raid for Möhnedam .

I used to be obsessed with the Dambusters, particularly as Mickey Martin, 3rd in command of the raid, was my dad's CO in the 1960s but since the 2000s and the censorship of the movie, the desecration of the dog's grave outside the squadron hq building, the closure of RAF Scampton and now being turned into a migrant camp it has just dampened my enthusiasm for the whole thing and makes me wonder what exactly they were fighting for now and were the losses really worth it in the long run.
