In 58 BC Julius Caesar began his war on Gaul in modern day France to both expand Roman territory and solidify his own political power.

Part of the reason for the war was also Caesar's intense dislike for the paranormal practices of the druids.

In 54-53 BC, the war turned against Caesar due to a major rebellion led by the Eburones tribe under the leadership of Ambiorix, which resulted in a major Roman defeat and the loss of an entire legion.

The crisis peaked in 52 BC with the great revolt led by the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix, resulting in a prolonged siege at Alesia that ended with Vercingetorix's surrender, marking a significant victory for Caesar despite the odds.

In the aftermath, Caesar continued to consolidate his control over Gaul until 50 BC, effectively bringing it under Roman dominion. This success greatly boosted his political power, paving the way for his rise as a dictator of Rome.
