Valve Source Code 2013 Tutorial (Episode 0): Downloading and Compiling the Code [2023 Edition!]

Hello everyone and welcome to a new (probably short) series of videos I do involving the source code from Valve for Half-Life 2, and some guides on how to do stuff with this code. In this redone introductory episode, I go over how to download (and get into a position to compile) the 2013 source code in Visual Studio 2022, which requires something from Visual Studio 2013. I do not, however, go over how to get into a position to debug the code (This is done in another video!). Please let me know what you think and see you for whatever I decide to do next, thanks for watching!

FYI for everyone downloading visual studio, it's just very slow from the archival website and has nothing to do with your internet. However slow internet can definitely make it take even longer. My minimum was a 2 hour download lol

Idk but I think basing your code off mapbase is better since it can be compiled with recent vs versions and you get its features.

Thank you so much for the minimalist version. I just can't stand unnecessarily big downloads (I too suffer from bad internet) and having a minimalist download is life saving. There would've been a good chance that a full few gigabytes download would somehow get interrupted and have to start from the beginning.

Thank you so much! Nice video! Well, I have a question though. What components should I install for VS Studio 2022? Also, It's giving the error "Based on your solution, you might need to install extra components for a full development experience", so, that's why I asked! Thanks!

Hello, when I try to run the Visual Studio 2013 installer, it gets stuck on the splash screen, I can't get any further than that. Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm using Windows 11 Pro.

Hello! Thank you for the tutorial It has worked perfectly for me. However after compiling changes to the source code, is there a way in which i am able to the implement the compiled code into an alternative source game mod derived from the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer so that i can test it there? Thanks.
