Brittle Stars | Fascinating facts about the unusual echinoderm that flees from light

Brittle stars are echinoderms. Although they are closely related to starfish. Brittle stars like a quirkier, more slender version of a starfish.

A brittle star has a distinct central disc and five skinny, flexible arms which may reach up to 60 cm (24 in) in length (sometimes they have six or seven arms). The central disc is a skeleton made of calcium carbonate that contains all the internal organs like mouth, jaws and stomach. The mouth is surrounded by five movable jaw parts, making it look like a star when it opens. Brittle stars are either scavengers or predators. Their tube feet help gather the food and transfer them to their mouth. Because they don’t have any intestine or anus, any undigested material they eat is expelled from the mouth.

I love brittle stars! I also love the narrator's accent! Genuinely cannot tell if they are Scandinavian or East Asian!

These move by using one appendage as a symmetry axis and use the others to move around, like four legged vertebrates.
